I see on the website that Ripley's Aquarium claims to help in conservation and education efforts and I'm wondering how exactly? Does seeing a shark (for instance) up close and personal really allow one to learn about and value their nature? I would imagine that if someone is visiting the facility, it's because they already have a love and appreciation for sea life. If Ripley's really understood the current dangers that all sea life face and are genuinely wanting to create a positive impact, would they not understand that removing already endangered sea creatures from the ocean, would cause an already damaged ocean (due to greenhouse gas emissions and resulting in ocean acidification) to remain imbalanced? Each creature that lives in the ocean plays their part in maintaining a healthy and balanced marine ecosystem. While their environment has changed for the worse, they are needed in the oceans. As well, they have a right to be free from captivity. I would imagine that since Ripley's values sea creatures so much, that they would want what is best for them and for the ocean, and that most likely means...remaining in the oceans. Captivity is cruel. While it is common sense, it has been known that creatures in captivity often suffer from depression. I understand that this petition might not prevent Ripley's Aquarium in Toronto from opening in the Summer 2013 , but I felt the need to share with you that I do not support Ripley's Aquarium and I am not believing that Ripley's Aquarium is doing much to conserve and educate. I will not be visiting the facility.
