The City of Hamilton has plans to implement Bike Lanes on Hunter Street between Liberty St. and Catherine St. This is a great idea however it has it's drawback. They plan on removing 27 street parking spots (16 metered and 11 free). When asked for more details on where residents and visitors/shoppers to the area are to park, it was stated that they are looking at alternative parking. So far, the alternative parking consists of making the free parking on Walnut, south of Hunter, metered parking, or maybe having some parking on the North shoulder of Hunter but not during rush hour times. These alternative ideas do not benefit the businesses or residents of this area. These alternatives mean that residents will not be able to park free of charge for an extended period during the day. In addition, having to park blocks away from your destination and walk alone at night isn't safe. Hamilton can do better. Lets think of a way that we can have bike lanes downtown and not loose street parking in this urban area where parking is at a premium.
