Chad has been locked into a continuous civil war basically since the pull out of French colonial forces. The country was recently singled out by Transparency as the most corrupt country in the world. However, most westerners are unaware of the injustices taking place in Chad. We are all familiar with the genocide in Rwanda and now in Darfur. We're all familiar with the warlords who rule Somalia, but Chad? I'd like to think this isn't because we're waiting for a hollywood movie to tell us. Are you going to wait for the story to make the nightly news or are you going to act now? In Chad, security forces often beat, torture, and rape the civilians they are supposed to be protecting. While Chadians have constitutional rights to freedom of speech and the press, these rights are routinely denied. Opposition journalists are often suppressed or even killed because of the their beliefs. Human rights organizations are often prevented from operating in the country. The prisons into which political prisoners are thrown have deplorable conditions. Young men and women are often incarcerated together in tiny spaces and nutrition is truly atrocious. More than three quarters of the people of Chad live below the poverty line and are unable to find food. However, Chad has vast oil reserves which the government refuses to use and instead obtains vast sums of money from world humanitarian organizations; little of which reaches the people. If you believe that these injustices must be stopped, sign this petition. It will be mailed both to Chad's embassy in Washington and the Office of the UN Special Advisor on Africa in New York. |
