As a 25 year old without a health care plan, I was discusted to find out that the HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) vaccination coverage is limited to girls in eighth grade in Ontario.
I had a cervical cancer scare in 2006, and in 2007, was treated at Markham Stouffville Hospital, and had a part of my cervix removed (LEEP Procedure). The HPV virus affects thousands of young women each year, and with the Gardasil vaccination, this can be minimized! This vaccine can be costly for young women, and should be covered under OHIP!
Upon writing to the Health Minister regarding this, the response was that the vaccine is strictly provided on a voluntary basis for girls in eighth grade. Please sign this petition! We all deserve peace of mind, regardless of our financial status!! I feel that we are being discriminated against! Why is this vaccine not covered and yet the treatment and diagnosis of pre-cancerous and irregular cervical cells are?
If you are not so fortunate to have health benefits, then you must pay for this vaccine out of pocket, which for students and people in a lower income bracket, this very difficult to afford!! It is much more cost effective in the long run for OHIP to cover the vaccine For everyone, not just eighth graders!!
Regardless of whether you choose to have this vaccine or not, it is the point that it should be available to people who need it. This Vaccine is currently being provided in Australia to the entire age group affected, so why not here in Canada??
This Vaccine is administered in three doses, totalling almost four hundred dollars. Please join my fight to have the HPV Vaccine covered under OHIP! Thank-you for your support!!
