The petition
Density is what allows urban neighborhoods to offer residents a wonderful range of goods and services. Density sustains the cultural and social institutions we enjoy. Density permits us to share transportation and other services reducing our carbon imprint.
But density is lacking in Hyde Park. We never recovered as a community from the populations looses of the 1960’s. It is easy to fail to recognize that we need density standing on a crowded bus or looking for a parking space. However these experiences don’t tell the whole story. The crowded bus indicates that we need more buses not fewer people and the search for a parking space doesn’t mean we would be better served by having more spaces for cars to live than people.
Hyde Parkers need to face the fact that suburban density cannot sustain urban institutions. We want all sorts of opportunities in housing, shopping, education and recreation. That range won’t survive without more density.
Hyde Park needs to welcome new neighbors, especially young families. We need to welcome new construction of a range of building types including midrise structures.
Hyde Park needs to grow by at least a third and needs to focus on serving young families.
