Horse Welfare First
We the bettors, both on track and online, sign this pledge advocating for better Thoroughbred horse welfare including meaningful strengthening of rules protecting horses and providing appropriate consequences for trainers and owners that break the rules, as well as greater security measures to protect horses. Here, the undersign, request that state horse racing boards, national organizations and up to potential federal legislation support and provide for the following:
Security cameras installed in all on-track located stable areas with the both the appropriate technical means and personnel to support surveillance of horse's welfare 24 hours a day, seven days a week
72-hour security barns for all pre-race horses
Confirmed diagnosis of horse ailments provided before, during and after horse care before medical, surgical or holistic treatments preformed with expected beginning and end dates of treatments
Violations of medication use that can include some of or all of the following:
Suspensions which require all horses under a trainer's care to be transferred out of his/her barn with no current or past assistant trainers allowed to take on horses for length of suspension, beginning with first suspendable offense
Suspensions which can include all horses under a trainers care not being allowed to race for a number of days in any jurisdiction
Fines for repeating violations for owners who entrust the care of their horses under one or more trainers in which the trainer has been cited more than once for violations
Forfeiting of purse money for future racing of any horses under the care of trainer cited more than three times for violations for a set number of days following any such suspension or fine for third offense
We, the undersigned, also agree to take part in a horse racing betting boycott if there is no clear direction or commitment to change by the January 1, 2015.
