Lets really look at the relationship between Baltimore City and Hopkins. Hopkins has been here for over a century, yet they've only recently had a problem with local council officials. Why? Oh I forgot, alcohol and partying were only invented two years ago. That must be the reason. Or alternatively, its more likely because Mary Pat Clarke wants to run for Mayor and is taking advantage of heightened tensions between some loud students and the community to get her name in the papers. You can debate whether or not the university deserves this reputation. However, you can’t ignore the fact that the Hopkins presence has spurred economic growth in Charles Village and many other areas in the city with their satellite campuses. In fact, I would be willing to bet good money that the value of Mary Pat Clarke’s house has doubled since she has owned it, thanks to the Homewood Campus. Now, its not surprising that there is some loudmouth politician trying to make a name for herself. What is surprising, and incredibly demoralizing, is the fact that Hopkins as an institution is never willing to stand up for its students. For the university to back down from a perfectly reasonable proposal when they have already been approved by the city for a permit is just a replay of the revision of the off campus party policy. And who could forget the emails from the university telling Hopkins students they are not allowed to park on the street for more than two days. Are Hopkins students second-class citizens? I have a residence in Charles Village and I pay taxes in Baltimore City. Therefore I deserve the same kind of representation that my next-door neighbor receives. There is no reason we should compromise with Mary Pat Clarke when she has clearly expressed no interest in listening to anything we have to say, even though its her duty as our community's city council representative. Standing up to her does not burn bridges. I’m sure there are a lot of people in the immediate community who have no problem with Hopkins students. For instance, the UniMini guys, or the owner of Eddies, or even that entire block of stores on St. Paul Street between 32nd and 31st streets whose lifeblood is Hopkins student’s dollars. Mayor O'Malley and the rest of Baltimore City Council have always recognized the importance of having a top tier research institution in the heart of the city and have gone out of their way many times to strengthen the symbiotic ties between Hopkins and Baltimore. DON'T LET MARY PAT CLARKE PUSH US AROUND. Let the University know how you feel. After 2 weeks this petition will be delivered to Dean Burger and other members of the administration. |
