If these people were working in private business they would have had their marching orders long ago.

The young girl could have drowned before they got there. Well done Coastguards from Hope Cove for using their initiative for taking their boat out the 200 yards to save her. They deserve a medal not disciplinary action.

Name: Natasha Webb on Aug 18, 2008Comments: I have been going to the Hope Cove Festival on the August bank holiday weekend for the past 10 years to set up and fire their Saturday night firework display. I know the coastguards involved in this incident and also know that they would give their lives to save a stranger. This situation is typical of Britain today, the coastguards have to use their own money to repair a public service boat and then get reprimanded for doing their jobs in a boat that should have been back in the water weeks ago. I would trust my life to any one of these men as I'm sure would anyone else who visits the Cove. With the amount of people, especially children who will be in the village this coming weekend I hate to think what could happen if this boat and these men are not back in the water. Someone needs to sort it out. NOW!

The lovely, sandy beach attracts hundreds of adults and children, especially, of course, during the summer months. It is sheer madness that such a busy holiday venue should be deprived of a coastguard rescue boat. Commonsense must prevail!

The statement of their spokesman that "search-and-rescue effectiveness will not be compromised by the suspension of the general purpose boat. " is clearly incorrect. The boat needs to be returned to Hope Cove immediately.
