We, the undersigned, request that the Township of Hopatcong, New Jersey amend its ordinance (§ 248-24) to allow residents to possess three hens for every one-tenth of an acre in all zones of Hopatcong without license or fee. We acknowledge that backyard chicken keeping is a growing hobby in America and one that teaches children in various organizations, such as 4H, responsibility. We likewise attest that chickens, specifically, hens, are not noisy, odorous, diseased, or a nuisance when properly maintained just as any other pet and that chickens do not attract more predators; rather some breeds contribute to keeping backyards free of stink bugs, ticks, mice, and other unwanted pests. We feel this is necessary for the sustainability of our community, green living, education, children's activities and local food supply. This step will contribute to Sussex County sustainability and have Hopatcong join the many New Jersey towns friendly to backyard chickens.
