Petition to Save Honors Classes

Save Honors Classes in the Rockford Public Schools
"Excellence Everywhere" is said to be the commitment. What about our schools?

As parents, students, teachers, business owners and taxpayers, we are dismayed at the decision to eliminate Honors courses from Rockford schools without notice to, or input from, the Board of Education, educators, parents and community members.

We understand it is the right of every student to have access to a rigorous curriculum that is designed to challenge their minds, enhance their knowledge and skills and prepare them for success in college and work.

We respectfully request the Board of Education to reject this decision and insist on a 2011-2012 high school course selection which includes, at a minimum, the Honors courses offered in the 2010-2011 school year.

So if you were to put all the honors students in one school that's not segregating? I can say as a student who graduated from Guilford High School, the honors and AP classes were not only amazing for my education but also helped me to gain confidence in my education, help me with building friendships, and also got me ready for my future education. Without these classes I would honestly not be doing well in college now. I do not think that these classes segregate the students since in my classes I experienced a broad group of backgrounds including African Americans, Latinos, and Asians to say the least. I think the school board definately needs to reconsider doing this to the children of our area. We are supposed to be helping them, not hindering them.
