Homer Community Schools has provided so many programs for so many years, but now we are at the most pivotal time for the continuation of our popular program. The School District will no longer assume the administration and we are looking for an adequate placement. HCS is primarily funded through the City of Homer and standard user fees. There is a proposal to the City of Homer to assume the HCS program. At the present time, the City of Homer does not have a municipal Parks & Recreation program (besides parks, trail & beach maintenance) nor a recreational facility. Most major towns and cities across the State of Alaska and the U.S. provide a municipal Parks & Rec. Program. HCS has the facilities and programs in place and available at no cost to the City for utilities, custodial, rent, maintanence other than assume its lone employee. In return the user fees collected would be used to help pay the employee (half of salary and benefits). This would create a true Parks & Rec. program thus securing the existence of HCS. Imagine the scenario with HCS closed. The hundreds of programs and thousands of participants of all ages will be gone. The buildings would be closed other than school district activities. What to do and where to go next What can you do about it Advocate. This is a very timely matter as there are one or two City Counicl meetings left to make this important decision. Monday, Dec. 5th & Monday, Dec. 12th (7pm) Attend and speak if you can or send an email to the Council but please consider signing this petition supporting this important issue that holds a crucial value to us all as a community as a whole.
