Holbrook Lesiure Centre is due to close on Saturday 30th June. Quite rightly people have reacted angrily to the decision to shut Gosport’s leisure centre months before it was planned to close and months before the new centre is due to open. The council claims that recent damage to the building’s roof has resulted in centre becoming unsafe, but is this really the truth, has the centre not been in disrepair for many years? Obviously this is a blow to the community and users of the pool during the Olympic year, however more importantly this is a blow to the hard working staff at the centre, all of which have been forced into redundancy. After guarantees of jobs at new centre, staff have now been told will have to re-apply for their positions at the new centre. Is this really a fair way to treat the employees at Holbrook, many of which have given decades of commitment to centre? Why can’t jobs be transferred and protected?
