Restricting children's choice ensures the continuation of abuse and harassment by a minority of coaches - children and parents are intimidated to speak out for the child or "there will be consequences" and "your child will pay the price"Flag

Name: Linda Juras on Dec 4, 2004Comments: We have been in the position of NFMHA telling us in writing for their best interest to take our children to another centre. They then denied registration for the up coming hockey season and have contested their right to play for another centre two years in a row now. I definetly feel that my child should have the right to play in a centre that is well run and out for the children instead of a centre that lies, steals and cheats to get what it can out of anyone foolish enough to let them. There are definetly too many corrupt centres that the OMHA is willing to turn a blind eye to. Minor hockey is big buisness at many centres and should be run with more accountablity. Centres should be prevented from not having to answer to the members. If a member asks a reasonable question they don't like, they should not be allowed to force them to go elsewhere.Flag

Name: Phil Sova on Mar 7, 2005Comments: The 8km rule seems quite arbitrary. I recently moved 10km away from the community that my son has played hockey in for five years. I just found out that we now reside 4km inside another hockey association's area and they now "own" his playing rights. My son now has to leave all of the kids/friends he has played with for five years because of this rule. I believe we should be able to choose where our kids play.Flag

Name: Judy Emberg on Sep 14, 2005Comments: I too am frustrated with my local hockey association in Montreal-West Island Hockey. I have four children playing and for the second year in a row the President's son is chosen over mine for the position of goale. My 13 year old son does not fully understand why this is happening. He clearly is the better goalie. We will try our best to get a release, so Eric will get a fair shot somewhere else. We just want things to be fair and for our child to play at the appropriate level.Flag

Name: Karen Warner on Nov 28, 2007Comments: Sackville Minor Hockey has the same residency requirement, it is full of who you know and lots of children are not making teams that should. They won't sign off, because they want everyone else to pay for their leisure. If you buy a bag of chips you have customer service, not in hockey, pay the money, shut your mouth and watch. Hockey Canada needs to be more involved. We need representationFlag

Name: Gary Duncan on May 2, 2008Comments: I have a very bad situation. We live in Whitby. Whitby has 1 AE, 1 A, 1 AA and 1 AAA team. The population has doubled in the last 7 years yet they do not expand the league. As a result, you have 60 players (all good hockey players) competing for 2 or so spots on each team. Statistically, assuming no BS politics/favouritism on the part of the coach, it is almost impossible to get on a rep level team and play competitive hockey. To add insult to injury, my son is NOT ALLOWED to play rep anywhere else (GTHL for example), even though he can easily skate at the A or AA level. He is only allowed to play Whitby Houseleague because the OMHA won't allow him to play competitive hockey elsewhere. Since Whitby clearly didn't think want him, why would anybody have a problem if he went to play anywhere else Is this about controlling little kids What is wrong with this picture This is about the kids playing hockey at a level they feel comfortable with. Not dogmatically sticking to bad rules set out by the OMHA/HOCKEY CANADA. Given that the OMHA/HOCKEY CANADA have virtual monopoly on hockey, we have limited options. This smacks of Facism and is unacceptable. The only thing more infuritating than this utterly irrational residency rule is their arrogance when they quote it. Where's Don Cherry when you need him Hell, where are the NHL players when you need them They should be the ones standing up for these kids. They were probably in the same boat. As a final note, it strikes me that this leaves the door wide open for corruption/payola and hockey cliques/old boys networks to get started. The whole situation makes me physically ill and makes me so angry I could almost explode due to my frustration. When will this petition be submitted and to "who"Flag
