Name: Kim Aylesworth on Sep 30, 2003Comments: Good associations with good coaches will attract players. I'm tired of minor hockey organizations being run like political parties, where power and patronage are the mandate, not what is best for the kids. Hockey is very expensive and I am my child's only advocate I want to be able to choose, after careful consideration, where I want to spend my money and who my child will spend (and be influenced by) countless hours a week with. It's time to change an outdated system.Flag

Name: Fife Maggie on Oct 9, 2003Comments: We completely endorse non-restricted movement and the same free market conditions that exist in every other aspect of our lives as Canadians for all minor hockey players. But, at the very least, some reform to the residency and release rules is desperately needed. It is outrageous that a player who is cut from a rep team, cannot be released to try out elsewhere. (Unless, of course, he plays AAA or is a goalie.) We live in the worst possible sized centre - small enough to encourage extreme nepotism and to have inadequate program options, but big enough to have enough programs to completely restrict movement. My almost 16 year old has never had serious aspirations to play in the NHL or even AAA. But, he loves practice and development, playing competitively and with other committed players and going to tournaments. Cut from our local rep team, he doesn't have the option of going to one of the other centres around us who can't find enough players. Instead, he must play house league in a non-contact, non-slap shot program which spans a 7 year age group or not play at all. This way they shut out all Bantam, Midget & Juvenile players from movement in the name of preserving a HL program. I expect he will hang up his skates this year. And everyone will simply attribute that to the age he's at - girls, jobs, etc. He's still too young to play men's hockey and he's way too old & big to play with Grade 8's. If you think it's hard to watch a broken-hearted 8 or 9 year old, try dealing with a 16 year old who has done everything right & is giving up the game he loves. Why did he get cut Not because of skill, not because he has an attitude or commitment problem and not, I hope, because we're problem parents. He got cut because of 'fit'. Our translation: it's either racial or it's because the new team sponsor has a serious hate on for his father. Either way, it's abusive. Other sports organizations have proven that removing stringent residency restrictions has not had a negative impact. The OMHA needs to recognize that allowing movement will improve the experience and the calibre of the game for everyone. This frees up centres and coaches as much as it frees up players. And the CHA needs to take a serious look at their discriminatory policies - it's outrageous that the rules are different depending on where your live, your playing position or the level you play at. At the very least, any player who is cut and all players Bantam age & older should be free to move elsewhere. By Bantam age, the players themselves know what is best for them and parental influence is at best secondary. Hometown hockey is a one way commitment. My son is committed to his hometown. Unfortunately, they are not committed to him. Everyone would be happier if he could leave.Flag

Another option is a class action law suit (ie. 1000 people @ $100 each can create $100,000. to obtain a reputable lawyer to challenge this in the courts.)Flag

Name: John Gresel on Nov 26, 2003Comments: When a hockey player is released from every rep. team in his community, he should have the ability to then go and try out for any other team if that team has a spot open on that time. Restriction to associations should be removed allowing OMHA players - after being released by their community - to go and try out for other assocation teams (ie. GTHL or Alliance)Flag
