Name: Lori Trautwein on Nov 17, 2006Comments: As a resident in the North Norhill Historic District, I am grateful that we have deed restrictions in place. However, just to maintain our wonderful neighborhood, my block has also applied and been approved for Chapter 42 protection. I am appalled that the developers have found a way to wiggle around the Prevailing Lot Size ordinance and that the City of Houston is allowing it. Our historic community is in jeopardy of being turned into just another townhome / condominium development and it must be stopped.Flag

Name: Jim & Barbara Potter on Nov 17, 2006Comments: It is appalling that loopholes are left in "well-meaning" ordinances so that people with no concern with community quality of life can circumvent them. Its like saying there is a speed limit on a certain street, but it doesn't apply if you are driving a truck. This is the kind of governance and attitude that gives Houston a bad name.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Nov 17, 2006Comments: I spearheaded the effort for prevailing lot size and prevailing building line because I and my neighbors want to retain the history and character of our neighborhood. This "character," generally consisting of 1 house per lot with a measure of yard around the house, promotes knowing our neighbors, helping each other out, and generally helping each other to watch out for and care for each other's property. Going through this process was very time consuming, but finally we were successful because the neighborhood wanted these requirements to pass. Please help us keep our neighborhoods as we want them. Please don't let the subterfuge of those who do not have the committment to the neighborhood that we do prevail. Thank you.Flag

We can easily lose that without protections the City can give, and when you do, it's like losing a piece of Houston's soul. Please do what you can to protect the historic greater Heights areas.Flag

Name: Linda Eklof on Nov 17, 2006Comments: Our address is 620 East 19th Street. There are two lots for sale on the north side of the street. One of the bidders has told me he plans on putting four homes on the two lots. Since they are not townhomes, he says they will be built to blend in with the neighborhood. There was a deed restriction application sent in and he was waiting to hear if it went through. Can you tell me if it did Also, we on the south side want to file a deed restriction on our side but because of the lot size of a architecture firm on our block, they said we do not qualify. Is this true Even the owner of the firm wants the restriction put in place. Is there anything we can do Thank you for any help or advice you can give. We would all greatly appreciate it.Flag

Name: Andy Nguyen on Nov 18, 2006Comments: I am a Houstonian expat living in Sydney, Australia, where it has enacted tougher preservation laws in the last 10+ years to save what left of the historic buildings and neighbourhoods. Not only that, Sydney put more emphasis on and defined this as 'heritage conservation' rather than 'historic preservation.' At the same time, the citizens are duly informed of the significant values of the heritage significance of their city through ownership of 'heritage' homes, and designation of 'heritage areas.' Heritage conservation is a must for Houston if we want to save what left of our heritage.Flag

Name: Christina LaChance on Nov 18, 2006Comments: I recently moved to the Historic Heights area--purposely to connect with the 'history' of Houston--so much character here, such a sense of place. Having grown up surrounded by history and its preservation in the New England area, I am apalled at the lack of support for historic perservation in Houston. It should top the list!! As a lover of hisoric buildings/architecture, I fully understand, value and support the need to preserve our historic roots in Houston!! It's a legacy we owe our future generations!!!Flag
