Hey Monash students We’ve just gotten a new Vice Chancellor and President, Ed Byrne, and, from what Monash has shown us through the Memo, he is open to some real change on campus. Well we would like to see some real change at Monash. We would like Monash to start reinvesting in us, the students, to help us fulfill our academic potential. We want Monash to make a few, relatively inexpensive changes to how they run things on campus to help us have every opportunity we are entitled to. Simply, our message to Monash is that while P’s do get degrees, we want all Monash students to aim higher and have every opportunity to do so. Come on, Eddy, now is the time to ignite a Monash Education Revolution – go boldly and deliver on our demands! 1. Expanded Library Opening Hours: Caulfield Library is open from 8am to 12midnight every Weekday, however, the Matheson and the Hargrave-Andrew are only open from 8:30am to 9pm. We call on Monash to expand the Matheson and Hargrave-Andrew opening hours parity to Caulfield Library. We also demand that the libraries are not allowed start operating at holiday hours till after exams – currently they go into holiday mode two weeks before students do. 2. Recorded Lectures: All Monash lectures should be mandatorily recorded so students who are unable to attend (70% of students experience lecture clashes for example) may be able to listen to their lectures online. This also allows for more effective revision. 3. Cheaper Textbooks & Free Course Readers: We already pay hefty fees for our courses, whether it through HECS/CSP or upfront, why should we be expected to pay for our compulsory reading And one or two half-ripped copies in the library does not count as sufficient in terms of free access to such necessary materials. All course readers should be free, and Monash should aim to make sure all text books as cheap as they can get them without dumbing down – rather than further profiteer off us. 4. Lab coats Provided: Students studying units that require them to work in labs should not have to pay to cover their lab materials. Firstly, they have already covered the cost of their degree through their course fees, so we shouldn’t be expected to pay twice for something. Also, for students who are financially struggling this is an unnecessary burden. Seriously, it would not cost Monash that much for them to store a few extra lab coats that students can borrow when needed for their classwork rather than making students cop another cost. 5. Wireless Everywhere & Greater Internet Quota: We need more than 40MB quota for emails and 1GB is not enough for all students. When was the last time Monash revised how much data students need to download More and more of our material is being digitized and more of our study and course work is done online. Access to wireless should be available anywhere on campus. Eddy, get wiv da times! 6. Priceless Printing: The cost of printing is extraordinary in a bad way. 12c per page adds up. What Only the rich kids should be able to afford printing out their coursework Simply, printing needs to be cheaper. 7. Sensible Semester Structure: 5 day SWOTVac. Every other GO8 University has a 5 day SWOTVac. It is a universally known principle that, pedagogically speaking, 5 day SWOTVac is what we want - no- it is what we need. Don't let us down on this one.
