Comments: Please cancel this reckless and destructive show. The true value in archeological artefacts is not in themselves but in their stratigrophy and context with the artefacts around them. They need to be excavated by planned professional digs, by experts who understand the subtle clues and are trained in the art of recording the site meticulously. What this show condones is nothing short of historical piracy, smash and grab looting. It is the antithesis of what archeology should be. Please protect the archeological record of the USA by shelving this show before it does too much damage. I also urge anyone else who feels strongly about history to also sign this petition and give history a voice.Flag -

Name: David G. Wachtel on Feb 26, 2012Comments: As a degree holder in Anthropology/Archeology I assert that this program is a very bad idea indeed. Having untrained treasure seekers disturbing historic or prehistoric sites is highly unethical and does violence to both science and to our culture heritage. Once a site is disturbed by "treasure hunters" some or even all of the valuable scientific information contained within the site is lost forever. Do we actually want to encourage what amounts to vandalizing important archaeological or paleontological sites? If you want such a show to air, bag the pro wrestlers and "pot hunters" and employ some real archaeologists, historians or paleontologists. They need the work and the scientific endeavor would be advanced as well. Learning how people lived is a lot more interesting than just digging up and selling the stuff they left behind. Raising the level of television is better than lowering it. Regards Dave WachtelFlag

Name: Stavros Dimitrakoudis on Feb 26, 2012Comments: Archaeology is not about artifacts - it is about learning how people of the past lived and how they thought. Mindlessly digging for 'treasure' destroys all the information about its date, its relation with other artifacts and the context of how it came to be in its layer. In short, it goes against all that archaeology stands for. To push such a concept in a reality TV show is simply horrendous and should be scorned by all civilized people.Flag

Comments: This show would promote looting of archaeological sites. This is highly immoral and probably illegal. The history they would destroy belongs to all of us not only the rich. More importantly the rich people who would buy the artifacts fail to understand that archaeologists learn more from the context an artifact is found in then the artifact itself, looting destroys the context and renders artifacts nearly useless.Flag -

To promote this type of "relic hunting", especially for nothing but personal gain is irresponsible, especially at the expense of sharing the historical record for everyone to utilize and benefit. This show may promote "looting" and be held responsible for their part in any illegal acts performed by the viewers.Flag

Name: Diane Patzer on Feb 27, 2012Comments: Please, if Spike TV has to do a show about archaeology, let it be done with professional archaeologists (not "treasure hunters!"), and let it show the legal processes required, and the careful attention to detail that a proper scientific dig requires. The vast majority of artifacts to be found don't have any significant cash value, and unskilled attempts to find treasure will only destroy whatever historical context exists for the artifacts of greater historical importance. Most especially, please don't encourage amateurs to go digging at random on public lands! I would regard a treasure hunter on land that didn't belong to them personally as a vandal and a thief, and would hope to see them prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.Flag

Name: Edda Rodriguez on Feb 29, 2012Comments: Programs such as "American Digger" encourages the looting of archaeological sites and perpetuates the false idea that archaeology is just treasure hunting, Indiana Jones-style. Looting destroys sites that could help us understand our cultural heritage and is also detrimental to the environment and to indigenous populations.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Mar 1, 2012Comments: It doesn't matter if you are "digging" on private land with the homeowner's permission -- that is still destructive to PUBLIC heritage and our understanding of the past. Only a controlled excavation by professional archaeologists who have been trained should be doing this -- it is not a matter of how "careful" you are removing the actual artifacts, there is so much more involved in the entire process that amateurs know nothing about. Archaeology is not just digging, if it were, then everyone could do it (like American Digger).Flag

Name: Richard Fuller on Mar 1, 2012Comments: Producers of this travesty claim they are doing nothing illegal because they've obtained the landowner's permission to destroy the historical sites on their property, sometimes by offering them a cut of the profits from the sale of the loot. However, just because something is technically legal doesn't mean it's ethically or morally acceptable. Too many legal yet immoral and destructive acts are committed in this country while the perpetrators dive through legal loopholes. That doesn't mean that American citizens can't exercise all of their legal options to protest such acts and try to put a stop to them. Legal or not, I find the premise of this show—the destruction of America's historical heritage for fun and profit—morally repugnant. Anyone who agrees should sign the petition, boycott Spike TV programming, and put pressure on its sponsors by letting them know we are boycotting their products. Of course, it's also every American citizen's right to not exercise such options should they choose. As for the show's legality, it's legal for someone to fart in a crowded elevator. That doesn't mean it isn't inappropriate and repulsive. And it doesn't mean the other passengers can't tell the perpetrator to knock it off. Well, the whole premise of this show stinks and someone needs to tell Spike TV to knock it off.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Mar 1, 2012Comments: Do you even realize what you're doing by airing this show? Hey, let's go loot and ransack cultural sites and ransom the artifacts back to humanity for a profit! That's not moral, and I'm disappointed that you guys have once again stooped to the lowest pits possible. THAT'LL BE A GOOD IDEA! Good job promoting the destruction of our history. The artifacts themselves only tell half the story. If you destroy the sites, you're shredding the other half before anyone with a smidgen of education can tell you what it means. If you had any respect for the field and the objects you're pillaging, you'd understand that and pull this show.Flag
