Name: Tim on Feb 27, 2013Comments: We really don’t need another supermarket in Herne Hill and I’m really upset that this decision was made behind closed doors and without consulting the local community. There is already a Sainsburys 20 metres away from the Tescos site and so it seems crazy that Lambeth should agree to this. It is therefore clear that whoever in the council agreed to this has never actually been to Herne Hill or has spoken to the community. Central Herne Hill is already served by the Sainsburys (which in the scheme of things is very low-key and relatively unobtrusive), a Costcutter, a Londis and numerous independent newsagent, mini-stores and off licences which together adequately supply the local community. Herne Hill is proudly independent with the only chain brands I can think of being the above and the Pizza Express (I know people who still refuse to eat in this branch due to the kerfuffle it’s arrival caused in the community). The arrival of 200 students should have brought more business towards the independent businesses however this will now be funnelled away towards the Tesco which will likely also steal business away. Would it not have made more sense to approach Sainsburys to take over the new site; this may have gone down better with the community as Sainsburys are already here and already have links within the community.Flag

Name: Matthew Bugler on Mar 4, 2013Comments: I oppose any new Tesco (or Sainsburys) stores in Herne Hill or any other high street. You cannot walk a mile in any direction in London without coming across a chain owned mini-market. They have destroyed the corner shop and hiked up prices under their "local" guise. They have killed the local high street butcher, baker and greengrocer to create homogeneous, uniform and bland high streets. Please stop this destruction of our high street; once our local shops are gone, we will lose our identity and become like all the other high streets in town. Buy locally to keep our independent stores open and stop lining the neverending greed for shareholder wealth from these large supermarkets. Why is planning permission all to often granted to these stores, they are not necessary on every high street and corner?!Flag
