Dear MPP
I am writing to you today to ask for your support in the Ontario Legislature as on March 8th, 2012, as Progressive Conservative MPP Lisa Thompson (Huron-Bruce) will be debating her private members motion, which calls for a moratorium on further industrial wind turbine development until third party health and environmental studies have been completed.
The Green Energy Act was passed in 2009, without knowing the physical, social and economic health and environmental impacts of industrial wind turbines. It also removed the power from municipal councils to determine the placement of industrial wind turbines in their community.
Last December, Ontario’s Auditor General confirmed that the Liberal approach to renewable energy is flawed, and has lacked the proper oversight. He said that industrial wind farms were constructed in haste, without proper planning, and without the proper science. I have to agree. In January, Ontario’s largest farm organization, the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA), along with the Christina Farmers Federation, (CFFA), also called for a suspension of industrial wind turbines until the serious shortcomings can be fixed, including knowing more about the serious health risks. I agree with these respected farm organizations. Also, last month Greenpeace Co-Founder Dr. Patrick Moore said that wind turbines are destroying jobs in Ontario and causing skyrocketing hydro bills.
I know we need to have an affordable mix of energy in Ontario, with renewable energy being part of that plan. However, we need to make sure we are doing what is best for our health and the environment.
Again, I respectfully ask you to please support MPP Thompson’s call for a moratorium until we find out the health and environmental implications of wind turbines. I look forward to hearing back from you and seeing how you vote in the Ontario Legislature on March 8th.
