I am starting this petition to help families like myself. This September 2012 my daughter will be starting grade one at Carleton public school in St. catharines ontario. She was taking the school bus for JK and SK as I work from home in home child care. As soon as she entered grade one the distance DOUBLED from 800 meters to 1600 meters and she is no longer eligible. We are 1260 meters from the school, which is a 30 - 40 minute walk for myself as a adult!!!!!!!! On top of it all it is down a street that has NO sidewalks that cars race down, then to a busy street. I cannot do the walk do to my job and it is totally unsafe for her to walk that distance. I work long hours and am unable to bring her to before and after care in the school (if there are any spots as there are very few.) and doesn't that defeat the purpose as I run a daycare???? So, I need your help try and change the distance. Why should the distance for a 6 year old be the same as for a 13 year old???? How can they expect a child to walk that far when they cannot stay home alone! Could they even find there way? What is stopping an attacker from picking up my 40 lbs child? Who can you trust to walk them? And do you think there little legs could even make it especially on snowy winter days? Where is our tax money going?
