Comments: As a local GP I absolutely oppose the proposal to close the A&E Department at Lewisham Hospital. There is no way (unless vast amounts of money are pumped in) that QEH Woolwich and Kings will be able to adequately service the demand. Closing Lewisham A*E would be a grave disservice to the local community and ultimately will cost more money as the local hospitals will be unable to cope with the extra demand without further investment. My patients will not go to QEH because of the bad reputation of this hospital. Even the patients who live in Woolwich prefer to travel to Lewisham Hospital for treatment! There will be a large knock-on effect of downgrading or scrapping associated services such as paediatric A&E , high risk maternity. Patients will experience possibly life threatening delays if they have to be transferred to other sites because they attended the downgraded hospital no longer able to provide full range and scope of services. These proposals are not welcomed by hospital team, local GPs and most importantly the patients.Don't do it!!!

Comments: These proposals will be a disaster for the people of Lewisham. The economic arguement is flawed. I have been a Nurse for 33 years and recognise the dangers of these proposals. The people of Lewisham deserve an excelent NHS service and Lewisham Hospital works hard to provide this. David Cameron pledged that 'The NHS is safe with me' but these p

Comments: Dear Mr Cameron PLEASE have the SoS for health reconsider the future plans for Lewisham from the TSA. They go against all of your criteria stated last year for changes to local services - the proposals do NOT have the support of the public, they do NOT increase patient choice, Are NOT supported by GPs and are NOT clinically indicated and also are not sound actions to improve health. We have one of the most deprived areas of the country and travel to the proposed A&E sites will meet with huge difficulty. This is not just for the patients, but also for their families. TfL do not have any easy or direct route from Lewisham to Woolwich - it will take 3 buses to get there and much heartache. The A&E and maternity services at the other sites are already over-stretched. How will they cope with extra thousands of A&E cases and the 4000 maternity deliveries each year. The proposals to close A&E may have a short-term benefit in meeting the PFI £37 million shortfall from South London healthcare, but what happens in subsequent years. Lewisham's PFI shortfall is just £1million p.a. and we are already managing to meet this. It won't be easy but we have made impressive savings with the commitment of all our staff. All this will come to nought if we lose our heart and the key consultant-led services. To say nothing of the votes you will lose! Logic shows that more will be lost if the services close than will be gained if the proposals go ahead..

Comments: radiographer general and a&e, this plan has so many faults it would be laughable if it wasn't so serious. The journey times quoted seem unachievable, the other a&es are as full as we are, no room at other maternity units, I had to wait 2 hours at another trust with a (autistic) 7 year before being triaged and then sent to Rochester at 22:00 last week. This is money before patient care however it is dressed up.

Comments: Lewisham hospital serves a large population of people who would be left with inadequate health provision as a result of this planned clossure. I think there will also be pressure also put on the ambulance team as a result of patient having to be diverted to other hospitals that are futher away and even now are being stretched to full capasity. We have a excellent chirldren service which would be a great loss to the community.

Comments: I am employed by the Lewisham Healthcare NHS Trust. I have first hand knowledge of the wonderful service provisions from the caring consultants, nurses and other associated health professionals. Its a crying shame and a total disgrace that the powers to be would want to close the A&E with the thousands of residents and those outside of the borough who use the service, owing to its fantastic reputation. The closure will have a detrimentall effect on the community and could endanger lives, more particularly the elderly and parents with young children who are within walking distance of the hospital or a short bus ride away. The closure could impact on the ambulance service resources as people on low income and those considered vunerable will use it as a taxi service to travel to QEH. Please reconsider your proposals, the staff work incredibly hard to serve the needs of the community and its patients. The recent march in November in the cold and rain, and the campaigns to save the service is evident the A&E provisions are appreciated and valued by all who use it.

Comments: I believe that the proposed changes will significantly impact on patient care in Lewisham. I do not feel that the needs of the local population have been considered and nor has the hospital Trust's track recored of delivering high quality services. The proposals are unfair and unjustified. They will contribute to a greater health inequality in London. Lewisham is being punished for the poor financial management of other providers.

Comments: With increasing local population rates our acute services at Lewisham are vital. The distance and travel to alternative sites are unacceptable and unalistic with the transport network and busy roads. Staff have worked hard for many years to meet all demands made regarding budgets and still provide the local community with an excellent service. Common sense must prevail!

Comments: It will be a travesty if the A&E and maternity departments have to close. the elderly patients in Lewisham will find it difficult being that far away from their loved ones. The bus route to the QE from lewisham is not straight forward, hence commute will be a problem. Pregnant women with small children going to school in Lewisham will also have difficulties. What will happen? will it be a midwife from Greenwich who will be following these mothers back in the community when they give bith? How will this work? It is difficult as it is now with the district nurses seing patients in Greenwich for health care and Greenwich seeing these patients for social care.

Comments: Closure of the A+E Department of UHL (Lewisham Hospital) will seriously compromise the health service for Lewisham residents. Many of our patients would have great difficulty in accessing A+Es further afield in case of emergency, possibly leading to increased morbidity and fatality. The closure of A+E would also limit the acute medicine and surgery undertaken at Lewisham and would thereby prevent it from being a hospital for training medical staff. Lewisham A+E needs to be kept open in order to provide an adequate health service to which Lewisham residents are entitled - it serves an area of deprivation in the inner city.
