I am a student, staff member, faculty member or administrator at a Historically Black College or University (HBCU). Historically Black Colleges and Universities have been at the forefront of educating Black people in the U.S., when other higher education institutions refused to or were deemed not to by law. Therefore, the missions of our institutions are rooted in the idea of inclusive educational environments. Yet, bias related incidents and discrimination occurs on our campuses due to intolerance exhibited by our peers based on our peers that do not look like us, can not walk like us, do not dress like us, or do not practice the same faith. With about 300,000 students enrolled in the 105 HBCU’s, it’s time to take a stand. I will work on my campus and in my immediate communities to end any form of bias, injustice and inequality that may be faced by my peers based on gender, racial identity, level of ability, sexual orientation or preference, socio-economic status, and religious or faith beliefs. As an advocate for equality on my campus, I will additionally confront issues of bullying and violent behaviors towards all groups. My name on the petition signifies my commitment towards an inclusive and diverse campus, and my loyalty as an ally to confront intolerance and ultimately discrimination.
