Name: Bridged Hall on May 5, 2010Comments: Building anything on Common Land is a travesty of justice and breaks the compact between Council and residents. Alternatives for the Ice Rink exist and would provide long term regeneration opportunities. We want an Ice Rink but our Common is our right.Flag

Name: Simon Hall on May 6, 2010Comments: This our Common. It is not a commodity for exploitation or to be used as a bank of land to bail out greedy corporations. Enough of this "cost of everything, value of nothing" culture. Lambeth Council are already using Rush Green as a builders yard and stolen a corner of Brockwell Park. They must stop now,Flag

Name: Melissa Harrison on May 6, 2010Comments: It's council bungling that has got us to this point. It's inconceivable that another site cannot be found. Hands off our common - it is, after all, COMMON land, ie. common to US ALL.Flag

Name: Scott Ainslie on May 6, 2010Comments: This is no longer a Streatham issue, it's a South London, possible wider issue. My partner would come all the way from Essex to skate in Streatham ice-rink. If I can think of several brownfield sites in and around south London - including Streatham, then the council & Tescos have to work harder. It should never have come to this in the first place. What a mess, what a load of bad feeling. I only wish I'd been privy to all the meetings between them!Flag

Name: Maggie Charnley on May 6, 2010Comments: The Common is a vitally important and much used local resource. It would be criminal to build on it and would set a dangerous precedent. The Council must find an alternative, brown-field (not green) site.Flag

Name: David Burns on May 7, 2010Comments: I can not believe that the government would consider building anything on common land. Land that has been common for a thousand years or more. The enviromental and social damage done by losing the land and public space far outweighs the benefits of having a skating rink for a few years. I also don't believe it will be temporary. Once it's build I believe that is where it will stay. An ice rink is a wonderful thing to have for the community but there should be a way to keep it open somewhere else in Streatham. If not then shut the rink down and rebuild the new one on it's place before you destroy the Common. This is one of the most insane ideas ever conceived. Tescos is pushing our council and our community around.Flag

Name: Magda Devas on May 8, 2010Comments: I would love an ice-rink but I don't think parkland should be used. I'm very concerned that Lambeth council seems to have gone along with Tesco's agenda. I think Lambeth should stand for the interests of local people, not those of a supermarket chain.Flag

Name: Christo Oglethorpe on May 8, 2010Comments: The Council cannot risk spoiling a rare open space because they entered a poor agreement with an aggressive company. Good government is now needed more than ever, we cannot put our trust in a company like Tesco to improve or maintain public facilities, there is no profit in it, that is why we have Local Government. Do the jobs you were elected for and are being paid for, please.Flag

Name: Elizabeth Owens on May 9, 2010Comments: I do not want to see any type of building on Streatham Common. Tesco is a large company with huge financial resources and can easily afford to honour its original agreement to build an ice rink on its permanent site prior to demolishing the present rink. As things stand, I do not now trust Tesco to honour any of its pledges and feel concerned that if a temporary rink is built on the common that Tesco will renage on its deal and that the temporary ice rink will become permanent. Streatham Common is a beautiful open space where local residents can enjoy walking or playing sports in an area of unspoilt greenery. This is COMMON land and must remain so. Tesco should be ashamed of itself. I, for one, shall never step inside a Tesco store!Flag

Name: Michael WIlson on May 9, 2010Comments: Streatham Common is too valuable a green facility for this part of the borough to be used as a temporary site for the ice rink. A brownfield site should be found which has no comaparable impact on the landscape and the environment.Flag

Name: Peter Newmark on May 10, 2010Comments: Streatham Common is a designated Site of Importance for Nature Conservation and there is a specific Metropolitan Commons Act Relating to Streatham Common that prohibits the erection of any building other than those necessary for maintenance or management. It defeats me why Lambeth thinks it appropriate to propose putting an ice rink on the Common and why they could have not found a far better site.Flag

Name: Andrew Smith on May 10, 2010Comments: Protecting the Common is essential. It is one of the best assets that Streatham has. Destroying one of the loveliest features of the area which can be enjoyed for free by all from new born babies to those with severe mobility difficulties in order to build a hideous "temporary" structure is entirely counter to the regeneration objectives. How will destroying the best feature of Streatham bring investment to the area? The Hub development is designed to improve the area and this risks destroying it. Those who believe this will be temporary and have no lasting detrimental effect on our green space are naive at best. Where will utility supplies come from, for example? I cannot emphasise enough how implacably opposed we are to this outrageous counter-productive, short-sighted proposal. The Common is for everyone and must remain so even if this means thinking again about the ice skating.Flag
