Name: Russell A. Hunt on Sep 2, 2010Comments: Since I live in Fredericton, I don't use the Common much -- but friends and relatives who live in and around Halifax do. And I'm concerned at the precedent set by this usurpation of public common land. Fredericton could well be next.Flag

Name: Rachael Wyatt on Sep 2, 2010Comments: It's such a wonderful, green centerpoint for the downtown area. For our increasing overweight and internet functioning population, it's an important reminder to get out and enjoy fresh air. It belongs to all of us, and needs to stay so.Flag

Name: John Kirk on Sep 2, 2010Comments: I am amazed that HRM still hasn't realized that "Commons" means land to be made available for ALL. It is common land, owned by the community, and to be enjoyed by all.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Sep 2, 2010Comments: If promoters are not willing/able to stage events by assuming all the costs, then let them seek other less costly venues where they can. This could easily be other HRM sites. Or Moncton or PEI who may care less about their citizens or be blessed with better venues, if not possible in HRM. So be it. All the costs may include installing new sidewalks for the ones put out of service, all local traffic control and out of the ordinary police presence required, PLUS a "disruption of way of life" compensation for affected local residents. Our tax money should be used for essential services, and never for competitive one-up-manship towards our neighbouring cities or regions. Governments can facilitate paid ventures by business operators without financial investment. The resulting venture must enable quiet enjoyment of life by all residents or a negotiated compensation for any aggrieved residents. This could add considerably to the cost of holding an event in a core residential area. Deal with it. The proposed gazillion dollar new convention centre will have no affect on these outdoor concerts. Tax dollars must serve all those taxed, or entitled. Signed: A. True Bonehead.Flag

Name: Gail Judge on Sep 2, 2010Comments: The use of the Halifax Commons was intended for everyone both resident and non-resident alike to be able to use the commons for please be it walking the paths, watching a soft ball game for free, sitting and reading, or other pleasures and not the intentions of it being used strictly for those attending over-priced concerts with fences up blocking access for days and weeks at a time. Concerts should be held at the Metro Center, or other areas more conducive to such acts.Flag

Name: Taiya Barss on Sep 2, 2010Comments: The pow wow earlier this summer made good use of the Commons, did not prevent people from using it,was open to all. The mega concerts ,on the other hand, fence off the land, stop us from even walking across it, and take the use of the Commons away from the ordinary person and give it to the private promoter for his own profit.Flag

Name: C. Bray on Sep 2, 2010Comments: There is another location somewhere in HRM that can accomodate the for-profit private company concerts better for both customers and local residents. It's time to try another venue for a change in another one of our 22 districts!Flag

Name: Janet Maybee on Sep 2, 2010Comments: Use of the common land for private profit (not really...largely subsidized with public dollars) is outrageous. These mega-concerts are annoying to those who live anywhere within twenty blocks (including hospitals and nursing homes) and are forced to put up with the noise and traffic even if they have no interest in the event. After one of the recent "country" affairs I was stuck on Robie Street for twenty minutes while the concert-goers streamed out and across the street endlessly. There was no police presence or crossing guard to allow traffic to move now and then ...really frustrating. That kind of irritation is minor compared to the month-long blocking of access to the Common in the midst of summer. If ever there was a season in which people needed green space, this was it. Give it back!Flag

Name: Mary Pedersen on Sep 3, 2010Comments: I don't mind occasional concerts on the Commons, but don't like using public money to pay for them or for the repairs needed to the park following concerts. For-profit concerts should pay for themselves and for the space they're using. The park should also be available for public use in good condition as quickly as possible before and after concerts, causing minimal disruption to regular users of the space, such as dogwalkers, sports teams, runners, etc.Flag

Name: Michael Earle on Sep 3, 2010Comments: I am over 70, and live in the block of Agricola Street closest to the Commons. The blocked off common for concerts makes it considerably more difficult for me to walk to the bus stop or to the grocery store for a number of days, and I find the music of the concerts, which is almost always very loud and not at all to my taste, forced upon me, usually up to a late hour.Flag
