It has been reported in the media that many supermarkets, restuarants, sporting venue and take-away food outlets are selling halal meat and chicken without labelling it as such so customers do not know they are buying and eating halal meat and chicken. Halal meat is prepared in accordance with Islamic Law and involves the person killing the animanls reciting an Islamic verse at the time. The animals must be slaughtered by having its throat cut while conscious. It is reported that in many slaughterhouses the animals are stunned before this procedure takes place to meet Western Standards however some do not follow this procedure and the animals are not stunned before they are killed. This is not a race or religion issue but a Freedom of Choice. Everyone should have the choice to know which meat they are eating and respect should be given to all religions so that people can knowingly eat food according to their own religion and beliefs.
