Network Rail intend to:

Remove the ramp on platforms 4/5 and replace it with a lift and steps;

Remove the Edward VII 1902 Coronation bridge that links all platforms;

Build a new significantly larger modern bridge with lifts linking platforms 4/5 with platform 1.

Why do we object?

Local residents and station-users were not consulted about the plans;

The project is part of the "Access for All" scheme but under the new plans one will need to take 3 lifts in order to reach platform 1 without using steps. There are no planned lifts for platforms 3/4. Removing the ramp on platforms 4/5 will make journeys more difficult for commuters with suitcases, prams and minor mobility issues;

The project will destroy local heritage assets and ruin the historic appearance of the station.

We request that Lewisham Council:

(a) Revoke the prior planning approval granted to Network Rail under Part 11 Class A of Schedule 2 of the Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) Order 1995;

(b) Undertake an investigation into the potential adverse environmental effects of the proposals including whether there should be an assessment in accordance with EU directives;

(c) Ensure that a well-considered "Access for All" design be implemented by Network Rail. The design should include both ramps and lifts, give consideration to the English Heritage “Easy Access to Historic Buildings” guidance and facilitate the retention of the Edward VII 1902 coronation bridge, a key local heritage asset.
