| 2 | Mark Hall | Please save the greenhouse. I do not want it to be just a memory... it has meant so much to the community and to me. |
| 3 | Mona Potter | Please do not close the greenhouse without very careful consideration. It adds a great deal to the lives of gardeners in the neighborhood, and it is a worthy spiritual component of the cathedral. |
| 4 | lorraine rose | I pray that the right choice will be made - not one that has anything to do with money, but with honoring the beauty of nature which are indisputably one of God's greatest gifts to each one of us, of all faiths, in poverty and in wealth |
| 5 | joel kaplan | My family has spent such happy times in your green house.. having just prayed in the church and then feeling like we were taking a little bit of God home with us, both in our hearts but also in caring for his natural creations |
| 6 | chloe kaplan | I have since i was a little itty girl, been taken to the Cathedral and the nursery. I used to be allowed to pick one flower to bring home with me. It has grown into a full garden over the years and I can remember which age I was when I bought each flowering plant. I will always think of this place as the place that got me started as a garden, becuase i was always so moved after leaving the sanctuary and then coming out and seeing God's natural gifts |

| 8 | James Carroll | In some ways the greenhouse IS the Cathedral to some people. Why in God's name would anyone want to get rid of it? Insanity, |

| 12 | Ann Marie Plubell | Efficient operation of a cathedral greenhouse is a ministry. It is to be differentiated from commercial greenhouse enterprises. It must be approached as such and, while any ministry must be fiscally sound, its mission must also be respectfully considered. As a supporter of the Cathedral, I am particularly concerned that any decision related to the continuing operation of the Greenhouse ministry-or any of the Cathedral’s ministries be well-analyzed, thoroughly considered, thoughtful and prayerful. The review process should also be transparent and well-documented. I ask the Foundation to defer a closing decision, analyze the greenhouse mission and function, prepare a business plan for its fiscal viability and only then determine what the greenhouse ministry’s eventual organizational structure should be.
As a personal matter, after the death of my father, I have found comfort and solace for a grieving heart and glimpses of spiritual joy among the greenhouse plants, talking to the staff (and rabbits, birds and cat) and observing the natural cycles of life and resurrection the greenhouse tangibly manifests. That is its mission. |
| 13 | Anonymous | A three year history of the economics of the Greenhouse is a starting point, but of does not adequately address the management shortcomings that got them there nor the remedial actions that should have taken place and remain need to put the Greenhouse on firm financial footing.
One thing that stands out for me in the closing of the Green House is that no mention at all has been made of the to-date steps taken to increase the profitability of the Greenhouse.
There has been no release of any information on the programs or efforts taken to date …
-- i.e. plans, goals or programs to increase the profitability of the green house.
It’s like they just didn’t try to adequately address the issue, because the have another agenda.
If they had informed their members, contributors and customers of the problem and solicited their support and it had still failed it would have been one thing. But to just drop it with no discussion is irresponsible.
Nursery and greenhouse consultants can be sought on a pro bono basis.
Like any non profit organization trying to maintain a balanced budget; they need to review all elements of their operation…Product mix and pricing. Display, advertising etc.
They need to reduce their costs and adjust their pricing as other Organizations are doing in light of the current economy. |
| 14 | Larilyn Andre | How can the Cathedral sponsor global warming conferences and then stop selling the plants that help clean the air and increase oxygen? Are plants not part of God's kingdom? I breathe in the aroma of the greenhouse and a long sought peace of mind descends upon my soul. I think of the Garden of Eden. And I bring small representatives of that garden to my home, share with my friends, enjoy..... The plants are so very special because of where I bought them. They are like no others. Please do not take this joy and peace away from me and others like me. Teach the children to appreciate the garden, expand the greenhouse - don't close it! |
| 15 | Edward Dawson | The National Cathedral, which I thought was about life and community, closes the Greenhouse and releases the person in charge of developing the local congregation - to help pay for a parking garage and, I suppose, to sustain the costs of maintaining cold stone and its own sense of world importance. Where there's life, there's hope. Sell a window or a gargoyle, bring in the community, and keep the Greenhouse! |
| 16 | Lynn M. Reynolds | I could not state more important reasons for you to consider than are stated in the above petition. I have been coming to and enjoying the Cathedral greenhouse for nearly 40 years. Please realize its importance to so many people and its necessary role in the connection between God and his earth. |
| 17 | Kathy Rohn Le Dain | I am happy to sign this petition and offer my support. The Greenhouse is a symbol of our fundamental human need to be a part of he natural process of life. In the modern urban world we are in desperate need of more physical and spirtual connections with the environment. Thank you for organizing this effort. |

| 19 | Joan H. Downs | The Greenhouse has been a favorite place of mine for many years. It has a sense of peace and joy that no commercial nursery even comes close to matching. It would be sorely missed by your neighbors and broader community. |
| 20 | Dorothy Hutchins | Please do not close the Greenhouse. It has meant so much to me and other gardeners over the years. I was a Cathedral Aide in the 1970s when Dean Sayre was there. |
| 21 | Christopher Goldthwait | |
| 22 | Kent Kester | Please keep the Greenhouse open! |
| 23 | Frank Sheehan | please keep the greenhouse open |
| 24 | Gail Marks | |
| 25 | Anna Marie Mulvihill | I don't care if the greenhouse is operating at a loss. The Dark Side has won, and the Cathedral is filled with Big Name Talking Heads if it does not honor humanity's common ground across differing beliefs in supporting gardens and the idea of gardens with
a touchable greenhouse already in place. |
| 26 | Barbara L. McElheny | |
| 27 | Henry Docter | |
| 28 | William Barnes | Please do not close the greenhouse. I grew up in Chevy Chase and went to STA and would hate to see it closed. It is a part of the Cathedral and the grounds |

| 33 | Joan Stolz | Please reconsider closing the greenhouse. It is meaningful to the public and to the employees. |

| 35 | GERALD SCHULTZ | |
| 36 | joy Drucker | We encourage the Cathedral decision-makers to delay closing the green house until members of the public have time to assist the Cathedral in finding an alternative solution to its closure. |
| 37 | Jeremy Haft | Please delay the closing of the Greenhouse until supporters of the Greenhouse can raise funds to help you close the gap and keep this vital part of the community open. |
| 38 | nancy symington | Strongly agree that the Greenhouse should be preserved if at all feasible. |
| 39 | Lisa Chapin | I have been buying plants and having window boxes planted by the greenhouse for the last 5-6 years. Please do not close it. Thank you. |

| 42 | Judith | |
| 43 | Kate Dell | Please retain the greenhouse and all that it means to the DC community. |
| 44 | Joelle Ogg | As a community member, I believe that the Cathedral's greenhouse is an integral part of the neighborhood and is a way to bring people to the Cathedral that would otherwise not visit. Although the Cathedral does serve many missions and goals that require the Cathedral to allocate its resources wisely , the greenhouse offers something very special to the Washington DC community that is irreplaceable and unique. |

| 48 | William J. Herron, Jr. | I urge you to reconsider your ill-considered decision to close this special place. It seems a shame and something of a contradiction that this greeenest of local spots must be sacrificed so that the dean can host interfaith conferences on global warming. |
| 49 | mary ann else rowe | I was N.C.S. student and teacher (now retired) at Beauvoir. The geeenhouse is important to keep open for so many reasons. |
