Gravesend & Northfleet Football Club faces the biggest threat in its 60 year history if plans to relocate Gillingham FC to the borough come to fruition.
A site only a mile away from the Fleet's Stonebridge Road home has been identified by Gillingham Chairman Paul Scally as the preferred option as he tries to relocate the Gills from their Priestfield location.
Scally's plans are said to include a 25,000 seater stadium, a casino, hotel, houses, and other developments on a 100 acre site.
Moving Gillingham from their spiritual home would bring them into direct conflict with Gravesend & Northfleet, Dartford FC and Charlton Athletic who enjoy string support in the area. It would also alienate many of their fans, 50% of which are based in the Medway Towns, 15% coming from Gillingham itself (Source: Paul Scally).
Gravesend & Northfleet supporters are now mobilising themselves in protest at the proposal and will be engaging with disaffected Gillingham supporters and fans of football throughout the country to fight these plans.
Fleet fans are arguing that to relocate Gillingham outside the Medway Towns smacks of Franchise FC - MK Dons - another move motivated by money. But to move the Gills to within a mile of an existing, prospering Conference club shows a heartless disregard for the feelings of supporters both clubs.
This petition is intended to be used to show Gravesham Boroough Council and any other interested parties the level of opposition in both Gravesend and Gillingham to the above-mentioned plans.
