On Thursday, May 23rd, music artist RiFF RAFF (aka Jody Highroller) was invited to Hot 97's morning show for a promotional interview and a chance to perform one of his unique, off-the-top, live freestyles on air. Instead the "interview" quickly became a unplanned attack by station director Ebro Darden directed at RiFF on issues of his authenticity, race, and legitimacy as an artist. Most pointedly, Ebro compared RiFF to Vanilla Ice, a corporate music puppet designed to cash in on hip-hop culture by appealing to a white suburban fanbase. We, the fans of RiFF RAFF, protest this treatment. We demand a second interview, in which Jody knows what he is walking into. Out-of-touch Program Director Darden claimed he had never seen or heard RiFF RAFF before attacking him (despite his rising international fame as one of the most popular young rappers in the game and 36 million+ youtube views) and based his rant only on the artist's appearance. We believe RiFF RAFF is the exact contrast to Vanilla Ice's model, working his way from his Houston roots to word-wide popularity, while working with a laundry list of notable "legitimate" rappers and producers along the way. Refusing to sign with a major label, RiFF instead lent his talent to the independent label Mad Decent and the production of the amazing Diplo. We further demand that in the return interview, RiFF RAFF can bring 2 guests with him, to emulate the 3 vs. 1 situation he was unknowingly walking into the first time. The guests can be anyone he's worked with, or any other MC's that can offer a contrasting opinion on RiFF's alleged "clown act". Fan suggestions include Diplo, Action Bronson, Harry Fraud, members of Odd Future, Simon Rex, Harry Fraud, Slim Thug, Dolla Bill Gates, Andy Milinokis, Snoop Dogg, etc. Though RiFF conducted himself in a composed manner during the surprise attack, and handled many of the issues well, he would be the first to tell you that his persona as an artist has always been the opposite of everything that was flung at him. He doesn't dwell on the past, he lives in the present. He doesn't waste his time with tired issues of race and stereotypes in the genre, preferring to embody fun and flash in human form with over-the-top lines and bravado which has polarized the fans of hip-hop between those who "get him" and those that don't. We feel that in bringing along 2 guests, there can be a more enlightening discussion of the "issues" which are of most importance to Durden, while being unimportant to RiFF himself. Be fair, Ebro Durden, and invite RiFF RAFF back, now that you've seen his fan's reaction to your attack (and maybe actually know something about him other than your snap reaction to his appearance.) We, the fans, demand it.
