Name: Gari Phillips on May 22, 2002Comments: In addition to the fact that parents of both middle school children and elementary school have a one hour time frame to "waste" between dropping off their children, my other concern as a coach's wife is regarding the extended 'practice and game times' for the students involved in middle school sports. The kids are currently getting home in time for homework, church etc. but this new schedule will quickly put an end to this. This new schedule seems to accomodate only a select few, not the majority of the tax-paying parents in Grand Prairie. Thank you.Flag

Name: Cindy Rummel on May 23, 2002Comments: I feel that saving about $2,000,000 over five years is not cost-effective enough to warrant making the parents of GPISD students alter their work schedules or get before or after school care. I have figured out that over a five year period, that either each employee would get around $114.30 a year or each campus would get $13,333 a year. Is it worth it to make this decision without some very thorough investigation. Plus I have spoken with many teachers and they are not in favor of this.Flag

Name: Kathryn Beard on May 23, 2002Comments: Many parents transport elementary and middle school students to school each day, including my husband. If the school district goes with the current proposal, he would have to drop off our 5th grader then go ahead and drop off our 8th grader which would put her at school at 7:50 a.m., almost an hour before school starts. He, as I am sure is the case with MANY parents, is not able to wait around and drop off a middle schooler at 8:45 and then try to make his way to work. "The real world" does not allow employees to start their work day at 9:15 - 10:00 a.m. Since it is a 100% probability that middle school students would arrive early, for some an hour to a hour and a half, the district should take a look at providing students with something constructive to do with that time. I have heard of districts offering special classes and clubs before "regular" school hours. It is not reasonable to expect each principal to "come up with" some way to handle the children dropped off early. The district is making the problem, they should provide a solution to it. It is ridiculous to expect students to stand outside of the school for an hour (especially given Texas weather) or sit in a cafeteria quietly for that length of time. The district needs to give further thought to the times for each school level if they insist on staggering. Surely there is a better solution than the current suggestion, one that would enable parents to drop off their kids at different school levels and still get to work at reasonable times and not leave children standing outside of schools for an extended length of time.Flag

Name: DeWayne Bridges on Jan 14, 2004Comments: The current tri-mester system provides our high school students many advantages and much flexability in completing their degree plans. Why would anyone who has the interest of our schools - students - teachers - staff and parents even think of trading this for the trivial savings gained by cutting ten transportation workers jobs. The staggered and changed hours would also create great difficulty for many parents. I also understand that the changes proposed have a great impact on the extra cirricular activities and the schedules of the many students who give their free time to bring honor to our schools. I also vigeriously disagree that Barbosa be given the sole responsibility for making this dicission.Flag

The early start time make it extremely difficult for working parents!! i.e. after school care, or w/earlier start times, before AND after care. Who's gonna pay for that You Mr. BarbosaFlag
