A United States Senator, The Honorable Orrin G. Hatch, stated in a letter written to our office in reply to a letter sent to him requesting that he may appoint or recommend this holiday observance, “God’s Preeminence Day”, and sponsor a bill for it to become a recognized federal holiday observance., and I quote:
"I value your input and appreciate hearing your reasoning behind creating "God's Preeminence Day". There is no doubt that religion played a great role in shaping our nation's history and Constitution. I have been a very religious person my entire life and I believe that prayer and other forms of religious worship - regardless of the denomination - can positively influence the values of America's citizens. Indeed, our national heritage has been profoundly influenced by religious thought.
Therefore, as I have in the past, I will continue to support reasonable legislative proposals - such as that allowing school prayer, the posting of the Ten Commandments, and continuing the use of "In God we Trust" - that I believe will result in more religious freedom for all Americans. I will keep your strong support for a "God's Preeminence Day" to further recognize the role of religion in our nation in mind as I discuss such matters in the Senate (Hatch, Dec.2012)."
