By having two natural sciences, quantitative reasoning, AND global cultures, on top of CF and SF, many of us cannot even start our concentration studies until Junior year. When I went to Leah Ramirez about taking classes that interested ME and were to the benefit of my concentration (classes such as international politics because I would like to be in PRD), she told me I would HAVE to take summer and J-term courses. I feel very discouraged about staying in the program if it means that I have to pay thousands of dollars more just to do what I love and slog through two years of solid requirements.Flag

Just like there are issues with the GLS program here in NYC, being abroad the first year of GLS has its own problems too. Since there are no science classes abroad, when we finally get to NYU-NY, we have little space in our schedules to explore our interests within GLS and in other departments at NYU. It feels like we have to rush to pick a concentration. While abroad, it does feel like GLS is exactly like LSP. In my case, in Paris, there were only two GLS freshmen, so GLS and LSP students were in the same classes and there was no distinction, save a few GLS-specific trips. I think the GLS major should be further developed abroad, as it is missing many aspects that would make the combination of the program and the experience abroad singular. Additionally, I think that the idea of options is important, but perhaps we can extend it by offering a suggestion. Most of the works we've read so far in CF and SF, I didn't read in high school, so I don't feel it is a continuation. However, I do think that having such a broad curriculum for one class makes for superficial reading and discussion, instead of in-depth analysis. Keeping in mind the importance of the literary and philosophical canons, maybe we can suggest that CF and SF classes be varied according to a theme or a specific lens. That way, we are exposed to many of the canonical materials, but perhaps the reading and discussion would be more selective based on the central theme. If anything, I think what we truly need is to form a GLS committee of students representing each year and each GLS site (NYC, Paris, Florence, London, Shanghai). And request that this committee meet with the dean and the faculty, so we can have a direct and productive discussion.Flag

The fact that we are all signing this petition rather than transferring to other schools demonstrates our faith in the potential of this program. I am only signing this after carefully considering the wording in relation to my own experience in this major.Flag

But by backbone we mean actual courses in the major, not prerequisites. And with so many prereqs. there is no room in the major FOR a major.Flag
