Dear Dr. Calingo,

For the past several semesters, students living in the residence halls have been struggling with being promised a gymnasium. We have been told, time and time again, that the South Hall lobby was being converted into a gymnasium for all students. Residents have been told that the gymnasium has been in motion, but the deadline has been constantly pushed back to a point where it is no longer tolerable. The idea of turning the South Hall Lobby into a gymnasium was first promised back in the summer of 2013. The deadline has been postponed to mid-February of 2014, and as of today, February 26, 2014, there is still no visible progress of the gymnasium being built in the South Hall Lobby.

As a University who claims to have dedication to its students and their health, how is it that we promote such a lifestyle without having the proper facilities to do so? We promote proper health habits with “Wellness Week” as our theme for Welcome Week, and encourage residents and other students to exercise when our campus does not have access to a full operating gymnasium.

Currently, in order for residents to fulfill their fitness needs, they must pay up to forty dollars a month at other fitness centers. When will the end result of a school gymnasium come to fruition? The residents are disappointed in the lack of follow through by the student government that promised a gymnasium to be completed and operational in the Fall of 2013.

Very concerned,

The Residents of Woodbury University
