The Peruvian authorities finally caved and granted the land title to Saweto. This victory belongs to all of you who hammered the officials until they did their jobs. Keep your eyes on the ground because we will not let them walk back on a single word.

The Peruvian authorities are still hiding behind their red tape while the community in Saweto remains vulnerable on their own ancestral soil. Their silence is cowardice and we will keep pushing until these officials finally sign the papers.

El pueblo ashaninka merece vivir en dignidad. La indiferencia y la decidia de un gobierno permitió la muerte de Edwid Chota. Aún hay muchos más hombres valientes luchando por la naturaleza, no les demos también la espalda.

We've seen similar cases here in Colombia, where environmental activists and human rights defenders are targeted for their brave resistance to exploitative industries. Que los sacrificios de Edwin y los demás no sean para nada.

The New York Times article has made me aware that hardwoods purchased in the US may have been illegally obtained in this region. I plan to spread the word!

Millions of hectares of indigenous territories are pending titling across the Peruvian Amazon. Time for the government to apply the needed political will to this long-standing issue. Ultimately, the law must be changed to allow for collective titling of ancestral territory, not just community-by-community titling.

Please give legal title ownership to the Saweto community of Asheninka in Peru. Protect your own first, original citizens by doing the right thing. Land tenure is the original human right!

I am Peruvian-American who lives in Chicago and attends college in Iowa City. I am a strong advocate for the environment, for indigenous people, and their right to self-determination. Please give the Peruvian Asheninka people of Saweto community their land rights. Thank you.

Minutes after I signed the petition, I learned that the "Ashaninka indigenous community of Saweto - Alto Tamaya was granted its land title on Friday, January 30th, 2015. The title will cover 78,611 hectares in the province of Ucayali along the Peru’s remote border with Brazil." See the link: http://www.rainforestfoundation.org/article/peru-saweto-granted-their-land-title Nevertheless, thanks for doing this petition!

Shame on you Peru for giving the green light to the timber mafia to destroy the forest home of the Asháninka tribe! Give them title to their own land now!
