Voting is a method in which a group of people can elect a leader and express their opinions. Voting is the main pillar of democracy and everything it stands for. As it stands, the voting age in the United Kingdom is 18 years old for British citizens. In the United Kingdom everyone has a local council, a MP who sits in the UK Parliament, and members of the European Parliament who represent you in Europe. Depending on where you live, you may also be represented by devolved bodies, like those that represent Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. You can vote for each one of those positions. Although people have the ability to vote some people chose not to vote, which makes Britain a hub for human harmony and human development. Just the thought of having to choose a leader is what the people of Egypt, Syria, Libya and the whole Arab world are fighting for. Just the thought of having control over your future is what is keeping those activists on Tahrir (freedom) square in cairo Egypt. The right to vote is important as it is central to the idea of democracy and freedom of speech. The right to vote is also important as it can be used to hold leaders or political parties accountable to their promises and manifesto. The voting system in the United Kingdom is by far one of the fairest in the democratic world as men and women are allowed a to vote equally unlike Saudi Arabia where women aren’t allowed to drive let alone vote. democracy isn’t forced on you but also unlike the Saudis, democracy isn’t deprived from you. Currently the voting age of most countries in the world is18 years of age, but I believe that Britain should lead the way in this new era of fair opportunity for young people.
