Comments: The GFCF diet was the number one, most effective intervention we have done for my daughter. At three years old, she was nonverbal and diagnosed with moderate autism. A full year of speech therapy had showed no results. Then we started her on the GFCF diet and within two weeks, she was more engaged and willingly participated in her therapies for the first time. Within a month, she was making word approximations. She very quickly "caught up" in language skills and her diagnosis was upgraded to high-functioning autism. Parents: If you have a child with autism, I urge you to try the GFCF diet!

Comments: GFCF works. My son, now almost 7 years of age, has been GF since age two, which stopped his foul-smalling vomitting and werid smelling stools (which were often very loose and close to diarrhea). Recently I began pondering the thought that he might have autism because of some strange neurological behaviors (lining up videos/toys, wild behavior, tantrums way past the age of acceptance, walking on tiptoes, profound verbal apraxia, recurring bowel issues, lack of paying attention when talked to, lack of prolonged eye contact, etc...) and so I decided to go casein free. There was an immediate (within 24 hours) change in his behavior and his spontaneous speech has been continously improving. All skin allergy tests and RAST tests showed negative to gluten and casein, which confirms my suspicions (that casein and perhaps gluten, were making opiates in his gut...something that does not show up on traditional allergy testing and something very common in children in autism). Some undereducated doctors do not see the need for a GFCF diet, but I know it works and I will continue to use it for my son. The healing of a child with neurological dysfunction is something a parent is not willing to give up.

Comments: My son who made no sounds for 4 months as a 14-18 month old toddler (rarely even crying) got sounds back as we went gluten free (GF) at 18 mos. Then when he went casein and soy free (CF and SF) at 20 months, he started noticing and interacting with the environment again, and laughing again! Also had the first normal bowel movement of his life at 20 months after going GFCFSF. NOT a cure, but we could now reach him to have him respond to traditional interventions. He has been on this diet for nearly 4 years and is now very verbal, talks about topics above age level, functions adequately with peers, toilet trained....still classified as autistic, but is doing remarkably well. If it wasn't for the diet and additional nutritional supplements, I know he would not be where he is today. We introduced each part of the diet and supplements one at a time and saw a definite change for the better with each one--some immediate (less than a week) none took longer than a month to show a result. We need this diet PROPERLY tested (not 14 kids for a month when it takes ~6 months to rid the system of all traces of gluten, 100% infraction free in food, craft supplies and health and beauty aids, cleansers.....) Then the diet can be recognized and accepted so newly diagnosed children's parents have the guidance to begin properly as soon as possible.

Comments: GFCFSF has been tremendous in the recovery of my 3 year old ASD son. So many wonderful things have happened since we became GFCFSF...he is no different than any other NT kid now. People should just give it a try...it could work wonders for their kids, too!

Comments: I agree the NIH study was poorly done and proves nothing. It can take gluten up to six months to clear the system. Also, many of the ingredients in the products on the store shelves cause problems in the human body, not just casein and gluten. To make real progress, remove soy, food colorings, all forms of msg (it hides under many names like natural flavors), preservatives, HFCS, all chemicals basically. There are other ways to be exposed to gluten also. For instance, if someone is particularly sensitive to gluten, they should avoid meat raised on barley and the like. Many people have healed their autistic children by simply changing what they eat. We eat this way as a family and have never been healthier.

Comments: My fully verbal 9 yr old daughter, who has an autism spectrum disorder, NEVER told me about the belly pain she SUFFERED from 24/7/365. She didn't know any different, so she never thought to report the pain, despite the severity. We use a 0-10 pain scale, yet when referring to her belly pains and upset, at it's worst, she rates it at 1000 or more. ... See MoreThankfully, thanks to a GFCFSFYF-low glutamate diet and supplementation, she experiences pain 1-3 days per week for up to about 3 hours. The more intense the pain, the longer it lasts. We've come a VERY long way in just 6 months, but still have a way to go. How did I find out about her belly pain? Well, I added probiotics to her diet last summer and a few months later, once school started, she began to complain about belly pain after school. I thought it was how her stress & anxiety from school was manifesting, rather than physical and verbal aggression that she displayed the previous year. My best guess is that as her gut flora began to balance out and healing began, there was LACK of pain. So then when she FELT the pain again, she reported it, since it was different. I began to experiment, first by removing soy, and saw REMARKABLE changes in her behavior within 2 weeks. Because of her history of seizures, I then started a reduced glutamate (we already AVOID aspartame at all costs). Within 5 days, *Gracie* noticed a difference.....it was easier to concentrate. Those two improvements, were all *I* needed to convince me that she NEEDS this dietary intervention. She has started to notice that even certain "allowable" foods affect her belly pain/upset, and lets me know not to buy or make that item any more.

Comments: GFCF is definitely working for my daughter. Everyone sees the difference and everyone can see when there's an infraction. But to have it work fully, one also needs to examine the child's behavior to determine other food intolerances, sensitivities, etc. that may also be in the ASD equation.

Comments: I have identical twins who are genetically the same. Autism is epigenetic. The environmental influence on the genes. Also I found that I was gluten intolerant myself and I am forgetful tired, and I get lost when I eat the gluten. It is an addiction like morphine. Glutomorphine. and Caseomorphine. It is a drug to these kids. The biggest difference that you can see is that different environmental triggers effect my identical twins differently and meltdowns are an indication that that have not been following the diet. Yes it works, and it is different in identical twins. There are no studies that compare the affects on identical twins. The studies that were done include fraternals which are as similar as any siblings so that test is not valid as far as genetics. Remember that it take up to 10 months to remove gluten from the system and 6 weeks for casein and any study that follows the diet for something shorter then this is not on the diet. Also shampoos, soaps and lotions can also contain gluten.

Comments: My son improved leaps and bounds on this diet, which we started in October 2007 (just shy of 3 years old). He had severe bowel issues and hadn't had a regular bowel movement since we was about 15 months old. The removal of casein ALONE completely reversed this issue, AND gave him more clarity and awareness to participate in his therapy sessions. He was completely GFCF for a year and a half, and healed enough to be pulled off the diet partially with the aid of digestive enzymes. This diet was our miracle!

Comments: As the mother of a 4 y.o. child with autism, I have found that dietary intervention especially gfcf diet has lead my son down the road to recovery, without it he would not be able to function and handle everyday demands. Therapy alone cannot heal my childs gut and allergies, I feel that the gfcf diet is the single most important intervention any family can do to help and heal their children. Rita G.

Comments: My son has been on the GFCF and soy free diet for 16 months. He has gained verbal skills and eye contact. He can play appropriately with his classmates. When he eats something with gluten, casein or soy, his behavior is altered immediately. His stimming increases, he stops sleeping, he becomes angry and agitated. This diet may not work for all children, BUT it does work for my son.

Comments: Both our family members and school staff working with our son are aware of the obvious benefits of the GFCF diet for our son. It is most obvious when he goes OFF the diet--many symptoms worsen and he often has symptoms that had either disappeared with the diet or that he had never even had, but are consistent with stereotypical "autistic" behavior. What happens to our child when he is NOT-GFCF is the motivation for us to keep him gluten and casein free!

Comments: Our son's success on the GFCF diet has been the reason we persist---he has been gluten and casein-free for 2 years now. There are nay-sayers, but they have not witnessed our son before and after this diet. His behaviors are scary when he is off the diet. As far as I'm concerned, he will remain on this diet indefinitely.

Comments: I have 3 year old twins that were both diagnosed with Autism. Pre-diet, Emily had 7 words. 2 weeks into the diet, she suddenly had 83 words! However, there was no visible improvement for Abigail. Now, I don't think anyone is trying to say that the diet works for 100% of kids. But if it works for some, why would anyone say that it doesn't work? Emily is proof that the diet works for many, many kids.

Comments: My son is proof that the GFCF diet makes a difference. His eye contact improved within one week of removing dairy from his diet. His eczema cleared and he no longer needed an inhaler. His constant diarhea stopped. His stimming went from constant to rare. He has gone from a distant, removed child to one that shows emotions and awareness. The diet has helped his focus and attention. This all makes his therapy so much more effective. He has normal emotions. He is happy and learning. I believe the diet has been key to his success.

She has marked increase in eye contact, no longer stims, and has showed increased awareness in her surroundings and even interacts with strangers. This has only been a 3 week trial so far. We will be staying on this diet, it is worth every effort to have our daughter back.

Comments: The gluten, dairy free diet has been the basis of healing our son from being hyper sensitive to touch, sound, sight and low muscle tone. Following the biomedical approach has meant our son now functions fully in Year 1, playing football and loving school. I fully recommend trying the diet because as a parent it is something you can do. It took away the helpless feeling. Remember that if your child is reacting to these foods that intially their behaviour can get worse due to withdrawal syptoms. It can take up to two weeks at least for things to settle down. Don't use it as an excuse to stop, you must do it properly or not at all. Best wishes.

Comments: GFCF pulled my son out of nose dive, losing skills daily. Also stopped the middle of nite wakings, screaming from pain of highly acidic diarrhea. He had lost his language and could not tell us where he was hurting. He would generally stay up and require supervision throughout the night. He had immediate and severe reactions to even minor amounts of Gluten. Years later, he is able to tolerate small amounts if supplemented with enzymes. Over the past 12 years I have read accounts from parents where some have removed their childs Autism Dx just by changing the diet. The AUTISM RESEARCH INSTITUTE (ARI) website has a section where parents rate their treatments and GFCF is the best and safest therapy of all listed, and without a doubt should be the first option tried for ASD.

Comments: I'm diagnosed with autism and was severely behaviourally disturbed with significant sensory perceptual impairments. I was diagnosed with primary immune deficiencies including IgA deficiency. 20% of children with autism are known to have IgA deficiency (Gupta). Most with IgA deficiency can't fight Candida so have to go low sugar and are usually casein and gluten intolerant (and are known to have false negatives to coeliac tests) and unable to manage high salicylate levels. I was tested by medically qualified allergists and found to be severely allergic to all milk products, salicylate, phenol and wheat. Later I was tested by Sunderland University and my urine revealed inability to digest gluten (in spite of a false negative Coeliac test). I have improved remarkably on a GF/CF, low sugar, low salicylate diet.

The meltdowns have disappeared, his eczema is gone, no more tummy aches, much more calm and relaxed and FUN!
