Name: Lewis Gage on Aug 23, 2002State: NHCountry: USComments: Comments from locals that no only residents have choice in this matter is ludicrous when over the years we have bolstered the local economy tens of thousands of dollars. Indeed, our interests of preservation of these historic sites is not so much self motivated as it is to ensure that future generations who will come to love and respect these lands as we have will be able to enjoy them without literally stepping over the refuse of those of us who have come before them.Flag

Name: Richard Pilcher on Aug 25, 2002State: GACountry: USComments: Our group, the Longstreet Society, holds our annual meeting in Gettysburg every third year. We would hope that in the near future you could find a site unrelated to the history of your area, if there is such a place. It is not necessarily a negative thing closing a landfill. Our recently closed landfill is now a nine field, modern soccer complex drawing a constant stream of tournaments with loads of visitors spending their money.Flag

Name: David Canright on Aug 26, 2002State: INCountry: USComments: I respectfully ask that the borough relocate and clean the McAllister's Mill dump. I ask this out of respect for the memory of the African Americans helped to freedom near the site and out of concern for the state of the "Baltimore Pike" area in light of the National Park Service plan to relocate the visitor center. Sincerely, David Canright Chesterton, Indiana sometimes patron of borough businesses since 1959.Flag

Name: John Baniszewski on Aug 26, 2002State: MDCountry: USComments: Although I am a resident of Maryland, I work in Gettysburg as a battlefield guide. The people I have given tours to know nothing of Gettysburg's critical role in the Underground Railroad, or the courage of those Gettysburg civilians who risked imprisonment to help people escape to freedom. When they hear these stories, they come away with a greater appreciation for the role of the town and its people in the Battle of Gettysburg. It would honor your forebears if the town of Gettysburg would take action to help restore this historic site to its natural appearance.Flag

I understand the need for a town dump and realize that the town has limited funds and locations for a site. But I believe that it is vital to preserve our heritage and the pristine environment along Rock Creek. Please consider our plea to clean up the McAllister's Mill dump site.Flag
