The Gateway Trail currently runs 19 miles from St Paul to Pine Point Park in Washington County and is the most popular trail in Minnesota with around 125,000 visitors per year. The DNR, City of Scandia, Gateway Brown's Creek Trail Association, Parks and Trails Council of MN and other community partners are working to extend this trail to the City of Scandia.
There is currently a $2.96 million bonding request by the City of
Scandia to the state of Minnesota to construct a critical portion of the
trail extension that will ultimately connect Scandia to William O’Brien
State Park. Funding would
cover construction of a one-mile segment of trail and a safety tunnel
under a commonly used road. While Scandia is a popular on road bicycling
destination, there is strong community support and a need for the off-
road trails funded in this request to provide
greater appeal and safety for families and children to use and access
William O'Brien State park to and from Scandia. As the trail extension
brings trail users to Scandia it will also add to the city's economic
vitality as it works to increase its appeal to
residents and visitors to enjoy the natural and historic resources of
this city.

I was just looking at the count and we are almost at one hundred signatures which seems wild for something that started as just an idea on my laptop. If everyone here could send the link to a few neighbors who actually use the park that would probably be enough to push us over that mark today. It is honestly so cool seeing people talk about the safety tunnel because a lot of people drive way too fast on that road.

We drive an hour across town to ride the Gateway. Stay for lunch, buy gas, do some shopping before heading back. It’s our only reason to head that direction. Would enjoy extending the ride to lovely Scandia, dropping some bucks there too.
I ride the Gateway Trail multiple times per week in the spring, summer, and autumn months. Part of why I purchased my home where I did was to be close to the trail. The Gateway is an immense boost to the quality of life in the area!
This trail extension would showcase some beautiful areas, increase safe opportunities for families and casual cyclists to get out and exercise together without worrying about traffic or getting lost, and promote vital tourism dollars to the area! Thank you for making this a priority!
The Gateway is our favorite bike trail in the metro area. We would love to start in Scandia instead of driving to Pine Point Park. Bike riding is our favorite form of exercise and would be great for our community.
I and my family would utilize this trail from Scandia to William O’ Brien. My son, his wife and my grandson would love to cycle on a safe off road trail with us. Plus we love William O’Brien and all of their hiking trails.
I hope we can extend the trail to Scandia and Taylors Falls. It would be much safer for cyclist on the trail then on the shoulder of the road with high traffic coming to Scandia and Taylors Falls.

Access to the Gateway Trail from rural Scandia will encourage greater use, and fewer car rides to safely access this glorious trail system. Please consider funding the trail extension from William O'Brien State Park to Scandia.
