Genocide is one of the most horrible attrocities that can be committed in humanity, and standing idley by as it happens is just as happens is just as bad. Although it is bad to do nothing as many innocent people are killed for reasons beyond their controll like ethnicity, religion and disabilities, there is something that can be done. Signing this petition will help encourage congress to officially recognize April as a month that is dedicated to the awareness and prevention of genocide. Much like Feburary is black history month and promotes the appreciation and adknowledgements of historical black figures in the United States, April would serve to do the same with genocide and aim to see its eventual end. Recognizing April as genocide awareness and prevention month alone, will not be enough to wipe out genocide throughout the world, but it is an admirable place to start. Being a genocide survivor, I know how devistating genocide can be on a family, but also living in the United States has gone to show me that many people arent aware of all the attrocities that are being committed throughout the world. If it werent for movies such as "Hotel Rwanda" or "Sometimes in April" the majority of the publiic in the United States wouldnt even be aware the Rwanda was country, let alone that it had experienced one of the worst genocides of all time. I urge you to take this in to consideration and make April genocide awareness and prevention month, not just because it would educate the public, but more importatnly, help save countless innocent lives.
