Monsieur le maire,
En 1838, l'écrivain Alexandre Dumas demandait qu'une statue de son père, Thomas-Alexandre Davy de La Pailleterie, dit Alexandre Dumas (1762-1806), héros de la Révolution, premier général français d'origine africaine, défenseur acharné des droits de l'Homme, né esclave dans l'île française de Saint-Domingue (aujourd'hui République d'Haïti) fût érigée à Paris. Ce qui fut fait pour le centenaire de la mort du général, suite à une campagne menée notamment par l’écrivain Anatole France.
En 1942, par racisme, la statue du général, qui se trouvait place des Trois-Dumas (aux côtés des statues de son fils et de son petit-fils), face au consulat d'Haïti, fut abattue par l'occupant et les collaborateurs.
Après la Libération, la place des Trois-Dumas fut rebaptisée place du général-Catroux, grand résistant et grand soldat, certes, mais aussi gouverneur général de l'Indochine française et ministre résident en Algérie française…
En 2002, l'écrivain Claude Ribbe, auteur d'Alexandre Dumas le dragon de la Reine et président-fondateur de l'association des amis du général Dumas, a engagé une campagne pour la réhabilitation du général Dumas et pour la remise en place de sa statue, dont le conseil de Paris a voté le principe à l'unanimité au mois de juin 2002.
Bouleversé par la lecture du livre de Claude Ribbe, qui relatait la vie du général Dumas et par l'ingratitude de la République francaise, le sculpteur sénégalais Ousmane Sow avait ébauché un magnifique projet, présenté à votre collaboratrice, George Pau-Langevin, aujourd’hui députée de Paris, le 6 juin 2004.
Malgré les nombreuses relances de Claude Ribbe, vous avez laissé passer le bicentenaire de la mort du général Dumas, le 26 février 2006, sans faire remplacer la statue érigée par la ville de Paris à l'occasion du centenaire, en 1906…
Malgré les propos de Christophe Girard qui déclarait en 2002 qu’il fallait en remettant à sa place la statue du général « réparer une diversion de l’histoire », rien n’a été fait. Une commission aurait même trouvé le projet d’Ousmane Sow « médiocre », ce qui est d’autant plus inquiétant qu’il n’y a à Paris aucune statue de cet artiste que vous prétendez pourtant admirer et qui a suscité l'enthousiasme de 3 millions de Parisiens lors d'une exposition sur le Pont des Arts organisée en 1999. Même si, à l'époque, vous n'étiez pas maire de Paris, êtes-vous vraiment sûr que le goût de ces 3 millions d'hommes et de femmes ne vaille pas celui des membres des commissions chargées de vous donner des avis ? Au moment même où vous occultiez le bicentenaire d’un Français aussi emblématique que le général Dumas, auquel votre ville avait pourtant su rendre hommage en 1906, vous exprimiez publiquement votre soutien à Pascal Sevran qui approuvait le tourisme sexuel et exprimait son racisme de la manière la plus grossière et la plus honteuse.
Nous vous demandons aujourd’hui de clarifier immédiatement votre position en retenant l'excellent projet présenté par Ousmane Sow, qui, non seulement a été le premier à s'intéresser au général Dumas, mais qui, mieux que tout artiste, est particulièrement sensible à ce que la remise en place de sa statue peut représenter pour la France, pour l’Afrique et pour sa diaspora.
En ces temps où une certaine France exhibe volontiers sa négrophobie, il vous est facile de prendre de toute urgence les dispositions utiles pour que la statue du général Dumas par Ousmane Sow puisse être inauguré le 26 février 2008, jour anniversaire de la mort du général Dumas. Pour célébrer le 60e anniversaire de la déclaration universelle de Droits de l'Homme (1948-2008), une copie de cette statue du général, réalisée en Afrique par Ousmane Sow, sera ensuite offerte par l’association des amis du général Dumas à la République d'Haïti, accompagnée de livres de l'écrivain, son fils, destinés aux enfants déshérités des banlieues de Port-au-Prince.

Mr. Mayor,
In 1838, writer Alexandre Dumas asked that a statue of his father, Thomas-Alexandre Davy of The Pailleterie, said Alexander Dumas (1762-1806),
hero of the Revolution, first French general of African origin, eager defender of Human Rights, born a slave in the French Island of Saint-Domingue (today's Republic of Haiti) would be erected in Paris, which was done on the
centennial of the general's death, notably after a campaign headed by writer Anatole France.
In 1942, due to racism, the statue of the general, that was at Place des Trois Dumas (alongside the statues of his son and of his grandson), facing the consulate of Haiti, was taken down by the occupying forces and collaborators.
After the Liberation, the Place des Trois Dumas was re-baptized Place General Catroux, indeed a great fighter and a great soldier, but also the General Governor of French Indochina and Resident Minister in French occupied
Algeria…
In 2002, writer Claude Ribbe, author of "Alexandre Dumas. le Dragon de la Reine" and founding president of the Association of the Friends of General Dumas, launched a campaign for the rehabilitation of General Dumas and return
his statue to its proper place, on which the counsel of Paris voted unanimously in June 2002.
Very moved by the reading of Claude Ribbe's book, that related the life of General Dumas and appalled by the ingratitude of the French Republic, Senegalese sculptor Ousmane Sow had sketched a magnificent project, presented
to your collaborator, George Pau-Langevin, current Paris' Delegate, on June 6,2004.
Despite numerous reminders by Claude Ribbe, you left to pass the bicentenary of the death of General Dumas, on February 26, 2006, without reinstating the statue erected by the city of Paris on the occasion of the centennial, in
1906…
Despite the comments of Christophe Girard who declared in 2002 that it was necessary to restore the statue of the General to its proper place "To
repair a historical diversion," nothing was done. A commission even would have deemed the project of Ousmane Sow "mediocre," which is all the more disturbing one since there is not in Paris a single statue of this artist who you claim,
nevertheless, to admire and who raised the enthusiasm of 3 millions of Parisians at an exhibit on the Pont des Arts, organized in 1999. Even if, at that time, you were not mayor of Paris, are you really sure that the taste
of these 3 millions of men and of women in not worth the taste of the members of
the commissions in charge to advise you? At the very moment when you concealed the bicentenary of a French citizen as emblematic as General Dumas, to whom your city, nevertheless, had rightfully known to pay homage in 1906, you
expressed publicly your support to Pascal Sevran who supported sexual tourism and expressed his racism in the crudest and the most shameful fashion.
Today, we demand that you immediately clarify your position while honoring the excellent project presented by Ousmane Sow, who, not only was the first one to be very interested in General Dumas, but who, better than any artist, is
particularly sensitive to what the re-erecting of his statue can represent for France, for Africa and for its Diaspora.
In these times where a certain France gladly displays its negrophobia, it is easy for you to most urgently take all commensurate dispositions so that the statue of General Dumas by Ousmane Sow may be inaugurated on February 26, 2008,
anniversary of the death of General Dumas. To celebrate the 60th birthday of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948-2008), a copy of this statue of General Dumas, realized in Africa by Ousmane Sow, next will be offered by the
Association of the Friends of General Dumas to the Republic of Haiti, along with books by the writer, his son, intended for the underprivileged children
of the suburbs of Port-au-Prince.
