The petition
The undersigned petition British Airways and GB Airways to maintain the existing GB Airways route network with the existing quality and level of service as provided under their franchise agreement.
In October, GB Airways announced the sale of it's business and routes to EasyJet.
In the press release it was stated "The sale agreement brings to an end a period of uncertainty about the future direction of our company. We are pleased that the business and customer base built up by GB Airways will now be secured and strengthened under the ownership of the UK’s largest airline by passenger numbers, and one of the industry’s most powerful brands. We will fulfil our outstanding obligation as a franchise partner to British Airways and then look forward to a smooth operational merger with easyJet. ..... The deal will bring major benefits to both easyJet and GB Airways customers, delivering a wider choice of destinations at easyJet’s great prices, and creating clear value for our shareholders. We expect the acquisition to be earnings positive in our current financial year and in the longer-term we will transition the GB Airways operation to easyJet’s cost base and operating margin levels. We expect to achieve both cost and revenue synergies as we expand our business at Gatwick."
Far from the claimed benefit to passengers, it seems the general experience that flight prices were typically cheaper with GB Airways than charter and no-frills competitors. GB Airways service included high quality seating, meal service and in-flight entertainment - none of which will under EasyJet's business model be expected in the future.
If GB Airways and EasyJet believe that their customer base will be "secured and strengthened" by the sale I believe they will be sorely disappointed since the typical customer in my experience preferred the quality of service previously offered. Most GB Airways routes are mid-haul and benefit from a "full-frills" service not the "no-frills" model.
This petition is designed to be presented to:
1. British Airways to emplore them to maintain BA quality on existing GB Airways routes
2. GB Airways to highlight the number of disgruntled customers
3. EasyJet in an attempt to maintain high levels of customer service and standards on these mid-haul routes.
