Name: Maggie Foyer on Jan 9, 2009Comments: Your victory gave a small ray of hope in an exceedingly dark world. I go to Palestine each year with the International Women’s Peace Service to help on the olive harvest. I know many Palestinian families, both Fatah and Hamas supporters, sometimes there are both in the same family. These people have opened their homes to me and I have been humbled by their generosity and kindness. I also grew up in South Africa where I was a member of the Black Sash, the women’s anti-apartheid movement. I remember the dark days of the 80s when we all thought that a bloody civil war was inevitable and then brave men dared to talk to each other and not just follow kneejerk reactions. You cannot be Nelson Mandela, Mr Obama but I think you have a little of that shining integrity and courage that he showed. In 1983 when he was offered his freedom on condition that the ANC renounced violence – he refused and fought this issue for another 10 years. Mandela’s argument was that the ANC did not want violence but they, as the weaker party, must be allowed the right to fight back. He argued that any deal brokered between a totally supine ANC and the ruling whites, who had the strongest army and police force in Africa, would not be worth the paper it was written on. It would be a deal between master and slave. In the 80s the ANC was seem as a terrorist organisation. The fear of a Party that was both Black and Red terrified white South African as much as the fear of Hamas terrifies Israelis. This fear was constantly fuelled by the media. I dread to think of the bloodshed that would have ensued if the ANC against so much prejudice, had not been brought in from the cold and seated around negotiating tables where they grew into statesmen. I think you have the power to start this process. I pray God you will use it.Flag
