Freedom of expression has long been upheld by the US Supreme Court. Some school districts feel they are above the law, however. A Florida high school has been trampling the First Amendment rights of students who support equal rights for gay people, according to a federal lawsuit filed today by the American Civil Liberties Union. In its lawsuit, the ACLU described an atmosphere of fear and censorship at Ponce de Leon High School, where the school board's attorney says even expressions like a rainbow sticker may mean students are members of an "illegal organization."
The following letter will be sent to the Superintendent of Schools:
Dear Dr. Griffin,
The undersigned high school and college students write to you to express their severe disappointment in your serious lack of responsibility in upholding civil rights to your students attending Ponce De Leon High School. As students from across the country we value being treated as Americans. It is with great disgust that we read of your efforts to prohibit students from expressing themselves in regard to Gay Rights. Such efforts are not only unconstitutional but immoral.
It is the hope of the undersigned students that you will soon restore these rights to your students. They are no more or less of an American than you are. We look forward to you rectifying your error and setting an appropriate example for the students and families that you serve as Superintendent.
Sincerely yours,
The Fight Against Inequality
