Like a lot of my teammates, I grew up without a father in my life during my high school career and I have no idea what direction my life would of took without Garys love and leadership that he provided. He taught me the right way to do things and put a passion in me to play and eventually coach basketball. Because of that, I had the opportunity and privledge to coach high school basketball and to be an assistant coach when Wheeler High School won the state basketball championship in 2010.Flag

Name: John Dube on Oct 23, 2012Comments: I still have love for Coach Hayes. And because of the amount of respect I still have for this man...I still can't call him Gary. I have always referred to him as either "Mr. Hayes" and/or "Coach Hayes" and could not agree more with Bill Fazekas (life-long friend) when he stated "A lot of guys who got out of high school after I did, they all said, if it wasn't for Gary, they wouldn't have turned out like they did." Also like Bill, he was a father figure to me and to many kids at Lake Station. In reality, Coach Hayes turned mice in to men and women. I practically owe my livelihood to him. I played tennis for Coach Hayes for four years and graduated from Lake Station Edison in 1985. When I first met him I was a 13-year old punk that lacked discipline and direction. I’m not going to provide particulars, but he set me straight by the end of my freshman year. No disrespect to our former principal, but even he couldn’t stop my inappropriate behavior. So let’s say Mr. Hayes made me an offer that I couldn’t refuse! And by the end of my sophomore year Coach Hayes informed me that I didn’t have the grades to get in to college. College I thought? I was just trying to get through High School! I didn’t have aspirations to attend college. Anyway, he told me exactly what I had to do in order to get to college, so I buckled down my last two years and raised my GPA to an acceptable level. And I did get in to college right after High School…and currently have a MBA. I would have never pursued an education if it wasn’t for Mr. Hayes. I don’t think a day goes by that I don’t think of Mr. Hayes and the positive impact he has had on my life. And it’s not just me…he’s changed many lives for the better. Our tennis team was very special and the bond we have will go on forever…at one point…we won 36 regular season matches in a row! And that streak was alive when we graduated. We were very dominant, especially for such a small school. I am very confident that there any many more of his ex-players out there who feel just like I do. Although going in to our Senior year I was #1 singles, Bill Fazekas was still a better player than I was as I had a tremendous amount of respect for his game. And I loved playing doubles with him as my partner, as his awesome serve would always set me up nice at the net! However, although Bill was the best during our tenure, I honestly believe that Tommy Gibson was the best tennis player ever to graduate from Lake Station. Tommy, you rock man! A few years ago, I know that Scott Baker (great friend) and former tennis and basketball player for Coach Hayes at Lake Station was trying to organize an “appreciate” event for Mr. Hayes. Scott was trying to get a bunch of ex-athletes from Lake Station to pay tribute to this wonderful and fantastic coach. This is the least he deserves for all of his life-long accomplishments and the positive impact he has had on the youth. I’m not sure why it didn’t take place or take traction, but maybe we should try it again? I honestly believe Coach Hayes should be in an Indiana Coaches Hall of Fame, but there probably isn’t one that exists that deserves his partaking.Flag

He even took me on as an assistant my senior year because he knew I wanted to get into teaching. I now have a BA and MS in Education and am working on a PhD in Cultural Foundations of Education. Coach Hayes put me in front of a class for the first time and inspired a great deal of what I've accomplished since.Flag

I am Purdue University Calumet Class of 1997, and was part of the team that made it's first ever appearance at a National tournament! (I was injured with an ACL injury that year, but still on the team! ha!) and part of the first team to be inducted into the PUC Hall of Fame just a few years ago! I agree that he had an impact on his athlete's lives in more ways than he'll ever know and that we'll ever understand -not only was he a great and passionate coach, but caring as an individual and cared about his athlete's off the court just as much. Always had a smile on his face (except maybe when I wasn't rebounding like I should've been :) ) but this would be a tremendous honor and am here to support it in any way I can! Thanks for all you've done Coach Hayes!Flag

He has spoke very highly of Coach Hayes and I know that he is one of the main reasons Scott is such a good man. From what I have been told, not only was he an amazing coach but and incredible father figure as well. This would be a great way to thank him.Flag

I say to you, I definitely get annoyed while people consider worries that they plainly do not know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top and also defined out the whole thing without having side-effects , people could take a signal. Will likely be back to get more. Comments: When I first met Scott, he talked about a man who gave him opportunities, taught him about sports, encouraged him to get an education, and was a strong male presence in his life. This man, he said, taught him to be the man he is today. Who was this man who saw something in Scott, a young teenager struggling with the absence of his own father, and gave him hope and faith for a better life. This man was Gary Hayes.Flag
