Name: Raymie Marchak on Nov 27, 2012Comments: Gareth would make for an excellent coach! During his time as a player Gareth wore the Rhody jersey with pride and fought everyday, every game, every practice to help the team exceed and win. He made other players better through his contagious drive. Even after graduating his commitment to the program never dipped staying to help coach and do what e could through times of transitions. Since his departure to another organization Gareth has excelled in growing a top soccer program at a high level and Rhody would be lucky to have such a top notch individual. Gareth has the support of many players and friends that span across different graduating years, this should be a tell tail sign of what he could do for the program and recruiting top talent to bring Rhody a national title. Sincerely, raymie Class '01Flag

Name: Brett (aka Larry) Albro on Nov 27, 2012Comments: URI has the opportunity to relinquish the glory days of the men's soccer program, when A-10 Championships and NCAA berths were the norm. Anything less was a disappointment for its players and coaches. Unfortunately the last few years have not lived up to the tradition we all worked so hard to build. Thankfully, there is a wonderful opportunity for URI to make the right decision by nominating Gareth as the head coach, who we know will bleed Rhody Blue for many many years to come. As a friend and teammate, I am confident the board will make the right decision and bring him back to the grounds where he helped build a nationally recognized program. - Brett, Class of '02Flag

His passion for URI soccer is second to none and -- having watched from afar his success at Siena -- it would seem to me a no-brainer to bring Gareth back home to Kingston where he belongs.Flag

Name: Peter Benevides on Nov 29, 2012Comments: The URI Men’s Soccer program has reached a pivotal moment in its history. What was once an admired program in now marred with failures. The URI Men’s program needs not only an exceptional coach to turn things around, but also an individual to ignite the alumni, followers of the program, and The State of Rhode Island. I was fortunate enough to not only grow up in Rhode Island but to also play for the university. I spent four years playing alongside Gareth, a true competitor and tactician of the sport. While I’ll admit there were times when our competitiveness got in the way of our friendship, I always knew Gareth’s intentions were in the right place, trying to make URI the best soccer program in the country. There are a lot of factors that drive a coach, but above all I believe having an emotional connection to a program supersedes all other characteristics. For many years URI was Gareth’s home providing him with lifelong friends, an education and ultimately his wife. It is time we put the program back in the hands of someone whose vested interest is beyond a paycheck. Allow Gareth the opportunity to revive the program, spark interest amongst the alumni, and envy within the State. Peter Benevides, Captain, Class of 03’.Flag

Name: Nicholas McCreath on Nov 30, 2012Comments: As a three time all-american, national player and graduate URi, i can say without a shred of hesitation that Gareth Elliot is not just the man to lead Rhody football to the next level, but a man who mastered the art of bringing out the best in others. As the leading scorer and person with the most points in Rhody history, Gareth has been the greatest inspiration for me on and off the field. His vision, drive and love of football is unmatched and he unites all aspects and genre of the game in his sporting genius. He has demonstrated his ability to transform programs in short spaces of time both as a player and even more so as a coach. Whenever success seemingly covers the life of an individual, people tend to refer to luck, but for the great people of our time, the more they work at their special gifts and give of their best, the "luckier" they seem to get. This is my public endorsement of my favorite URI athlete, the seventh leading scorer in school history, the man from Northern Ireland who will personify the Alex Ferguson-like attitudes, ambitions and results: Gareth Elliot. This is an easy choice and I promise you that greatness lies only at the doorsteps. Twenty years down the line in hindsight we will all see that even this endorsement barely begin to give him justice. -Nicholas McCreath Go RhodyFlag

Name: Greg Bironas on Dec 4, 2012Comments: Gareth was a teammate and friend and like so many others have stated the right man for the job. He has the passion and motivation to use what he is given to succeed. His work ethic will ensure endless days and nights to recruit the top talent and athletes that fit the mold of URI. He doesn't accept anything but the best out of his peers and his personality has a way to get just that. He was always loyal, honorable and respected amonst his team. His athletic skills, love for the game and accolades over the years speak for themselves. It's his leadership and work ethic that will bring back Rhody soccer and in turn, bring the fans to the stands.Flag
