GAP is one of the most popular clothing brands in the world, and along with its subsidiaries (Old Navy, Banana Republic) it controls a large portion of the market. However, GAP's fortune is based off of the backs of child labourers in India, among the other countries where GAP's products are made. In 2007, a 10-year-old boy was filmed making clothes for GAP shops in the US and Europe by the UK’s observer newspaper. Apparently, this boy had been sold to a factory owner by his family in order to pay off debts held by the family. He had been working for roughly four months with no pay and was barred from leaving until his family’s debts had been paid off. Another boy, this one 12-years-old, said that he would be beaten by the factory owner if he was not working hard enough. The factory was raided and 28 boys as young as 10-years-old were found working in cramped quarters, wearing only shorts - no shoes. In response the the incident, GAP spokesman Dan Henkle said: “We were made aware earlier this week that a reporter had found an incident of children working in a factory that was producing for one of our brands, and this is completely unacceptable to us. We have a strict prohibition on child labour, and we are taking this very seriously. This is very upsetting and we intend to investigate thoroughly." Another GAP spokeswoman added that GAP had no knowledge of the factory owner's decision to use child labour and that they were not responsible. GAP has around 2000 factories - mainly in east and southern Asia. However, GAP only has about 90 monitors for all of these factories; clearly not enough. How can GAP ensure their clothes are child labour-free if they can't monitor their factories? What this petition is calling for is for GAP to take an active role in ensuring their products are made without child labour. We call for GAP to hold full audits of its factories and hire more monitors. The only way public confidence can be restored is not through hollow assurances but through lasting commitments to bettering the conditions in the factories and ensuring the discontinuance of child labour.
