Name: Peter North on Dec 3, 2009Comments: it is crucial that academics are able to research protest groups and events safely and ethically without imperilling themselves or those with whom they research. It is a principle of freedom of speech and of association.Flag

Name: Nicholas Crane on Dec 3, 2009Comments: It is my belief that the charges again Scott Demuth should be dismissed. This does not necessarily reflect any sympathy for his research participants. Rather, I believe this is crucial to ensuring the integrity of academic institutions in the United States. The ability to keep sources anonymous allows for important research to be done. It must be protected.Flag

Indeed, it is required by both British and American Sociological Associations. Scott Demuth was merely abiding by these ethical codes and all charges against him should be dropped. It would be astonishing for the US federal grand jury to breach the principles academic freedom by convicting Scott of a criminal offence.Flag

This student should not be pressured to reveal any information he might have (and it is equally possible he has none) acquired in the context of academic research which assures participants confidentiality and anonymity.Flag
