Peter is finally free. The Rwandan government tried to silence a lawyer for doing his job but they failed because we refused to let him be forgotten.

We urgently appeal to the United States State Department, the Commonwealth of Nations and the United Nations Human Rights Council  to apply pressure for the immediate release of Professor Peter Erlinder, whom Rwandan Police arrested early on May 28th on charges of "genocide ideology." He had traveled to Rwanda's capital, Kigali, on May 23, to join the legal defense team of Rwandan presidential candidate Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza.

His duty as a lawyer is to be a vigorous and conscientious advocate for his clients. Everything he has said has been in the context of his representation of his clients and his arrest is a violation, not just of his rights, but those of the people he represents.

We can help defend his rights now by drawing U.S. government and media attention to his situation and holding the Rwandan government accountable for his well-being.

Professor Erlinder has been acting in the best tradition of the legal profession and has been a vigorous advocate in his representation of Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza. There can be no justice for anyone if the state can silence lawyers for defendants whom it dislikes and a government cannot be trusted that seeks to prevent lawyers from being advocates for their clients.

Peter needs your help now, because legal costs are rising. Consider a  donation to his defense fund, please?

You can find it here:

If you can donate anything, we'd really appreciate it.

The Rwandan government thinks they can silence a defense attorney by throwing him in a cage but they are wrong. I am spending my hours flooding the State Department with demands for action because their diplomatic silence is complicity.

This is so wrong. Nobody should be locked up for defending someone. Praying for his safety.

RWANDA needs to be held accountable. Silencing the defense team is a human rights violation plain and simple.

Ridiculous to arrest a lawyer just for doing his job. Free him now!
