We the undersigned are very concerned about the welfare of Lucy, a female Asian elephant, currently living alone at the Edmonton Valley Zoo. Lucy has been suffering from arthritis and chronic foot infections, the leading cause of death in captive elephants. Edmonton's cold climate, the small enclosure and the lack of same species stimulation is not appropriate for female Asian elephants. We implore the Edmonton City Council to move Lucy to the PAWS sanctuary in California as soon as possible.
I grew up with Lucy in Edmonton and am very ashamed of my hometown that she is still kept there. Please allow an outside medical examination to be done and allow her to go to a sanctuary with a warmer climate and other elephants. Female elephants are EXTREMELY social and it is tragic that she is being kept in the the smallest ramshackle zoo I've ever seen in my life with little room to roam, which is mostly concrete and hard on her feet. Funds can be raised to pay for everything. It can be done. Let her go. Please.
Lucy is a female elpephant who is suffering from various ailments, a cold climate, and a lack of space appropriate to her needs. She deserves to be set free in a sanctuary and the town and zoo in Edmonton should help her.
Allow Lucy to live as an elephant among her own for friends and companions. She richly deserves to be treated kindly and with compassion.
