Bill ConlonPlease see that these people are released as soon as possible. This sort of criminalization should not be tolerated in Canada. I can think of a hundred reasons why they should be released, and not one to justify incarceration.
Orion MckayKI UNITED WILL PREVAIL I'm a youth for KI and I support & I'm very proud of our leadership in standing for what they believe in our land, so that my children and many other children may have a chance to connect with the land in a meanful way, in a way that was thought by my grandfather in my upbringing. I really want the leadership released from the prisons and return home. thank you
Jemima CutfeetIt really saddens me to see our leaders and band member being jailed when all they have done is to follow the mandate of the community....that is, to protect our home, our land. We live here...our life is here...our life is deeply connected to the land. I wish all ppl could understand that. I want to see the KI-6 come home. They love our home just as much as we do. We miss them.

Shari ChapmanFirst of all, FREE KI-6! I seriously don't agree with the decision of the courts to lock up KI leaders like they are criminals. Not only because I am a member of KI, but because I have been learning in school that justice is suppose to be fair and I don't see anything fair about locking up innocent people. Think about what this says to the youth and future leaders of KI and other communities like it facing these issues. In school I learned that sentencing goals have specific goals. For example, deterrence - specific to the person(at sentencing) and to the general public(to make an example as to what will happen if you too, break the law). What is the justice system trying to say in locking these people up, anyone who tries to protect their land and habitat will be thrown in jail like a common criminal? There are also retributive goals of the court, such as denunciation. Are you trying to say that it is immoral to stand up for what you believe in? Well this is exactly what you are saying to the youth and people of the KI community, even if it is not what you intended to say. Another thing that I don't understand is, how does putting these people in jail serve as public interest? If anything, there should and will be public out cry from all the communities as they stand together. --Concerned KI memeber.
Sheila SaikkonenFree KI-6 I can't believe what the govenment is doing to us again. Keep fighting this and stay strong. We will do our best on the outside.

lydia biggeorgehi there1 I am a rpoud member of KI. I was born and raised there for most of my life until I left a few years ago..i love the community, the land and people. It is a shame a country like Canada who openly brags being mutli-cultural and that these different nations have individual rights. Where are these peoples right?? Shame on Canada
Brock CampbellIt's disgusting the way the Government's treat our people. As a young Aboriginal student I vow to one day graduate and do everything in my power to make changes to the system.

Ian CapletteMALASPINA STUDENTS’ UNION MEDIA ADVISORY ABORIGINAL STUDENTS STAGE OVERNIGHT PROTEST Outrage at Treatment of Aboriginal People by Ontario Government Pushes Malaspina Students to take Local Action NANAIMO - 6 Aboriginal Malapina University-College students will stage an overnight protest beginning April 14th at Malaspina’s Nanaimo Campus. The protest is in support of the six members of the Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug Nation at Big Trout Lake in Ontario, who were jailed for contempt of court while defending their traditional lands and resources. The students will also be fasting in protest of the unfair treatment of the Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug Nation by the Ontario government. “Students and community members are appalled at the continued attacks of indigenous rights by the government of Ontario,” said Ian Caplette, Aboriginal Students’ Representative for the Malaspina Students’ Union and protest organizer. “Though this issue is occurring on the other side of the country, indigenous peoples in British Columbia face the same challenges to their traditional rights, lands and resources, and stand in solidarity with those from the Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug Nation who are fighting for their rights and seeking justice,” said Caplette. A member of the Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug Nation and graduating Malaspina student will be present at the protest. “The Snuneymuxw band has graciously sanctioned this action on their traditional territory, and we wish to thank them for the opportunity.” - 30 – WHERE: Malaspina University-College (Nanaimo Campus) – Building 355 WHEN: April 14, 2008 – 2pm to April 15, 7am.
